Casper’s Scare School: Costume Closet by Mindshapes – Review
Who doesn’t love the world’s friendliest ghost? The iconic cartoon character, Casper the Friendly Ghost, can now be found in an entertaining iOS app for children by Mindshapes along with Classic Media called Casper’s Scare School: Costume Closet. This app, aimed at children 3-6 years, will help strengthen the users short-term memory and introduce them to memory recall, object recognition, sorting and grouping by mixing and matching a variety of costumes for Casper and his friends, Mantha and Ra, to dress up in. They can be anything from Frankenstein or a Fairy to a hairy Werewolf and all spooky things in between.
The user is shown a complete costume for 10 seconds and must memorise the different elements. When the costume pieces are matched correctly, other new costumes are unlocked. As the user unlocks more costumes, the game becomes increasingly more challenging. Unlocked costume items are stored in the costume closet where the user can dress up Casper and his friends. The possibilities are almost endless for the types of creatures you can created from the various costume elements. Users can also take a photo of their spooky monster creations to share with friends and family.
There are no ‘Settings’ for this game but you really don’t need any as apart from memorising and matching the costume items, the gameplay is fairly limited to just dressing up your character. With 15 different costumes included, there is more than enough variety to keep kids engaged for a while without becoming monotonous. I do feel the $2.99 cost is a little steep for the amount of activities involved but you have to hand it to Mindshapes, the do make awesome apps. There are no in-game purchases or advertisements of any kind which is always a bonus in my book.
