Dr. Seuss Band by Oceanhouse Media will have you tapping your feet and clapping your hands as you play music on your iPad. The app turns your device into a musical instrument that you can create from a variety of choices including a trumpet, french horn, clarinet, trombone and flute with a variety of effects including fish bowl and train whistle. The app includes instructions which help the user tap the colored buttons to play musical tunes, swipe the horn to change the pieces and hold down the colored bar for a key. Dr. Suess Band comes with ten songs from various book soundtracks which are all entertaining and appropriate for children.
One of our favorite portions of the app was the ability to create your own horn, by swapping out various parts of horn to create the instrument that you liked the best. It was also great because there are three levels which meant that it could be on the beginner level for my son while I could play on the medium or hard levels. We found that the free play portion of the app worked best for us as my son liked to tap on the screen rather than following along to a musical tune.
I did wish we had the ability to save our creations, as my son has gotten creative and wanted to share them with friends and family. This app does include the option to purchase in-app content which you can lock out using your device’s settings. If you do make a purchase via the Apple store, your device will be “unlocked” for 15 minutes and an in-app purchase could inadvertently be made. I’ve used the app quite a bit and have not felt the need to make any in-app purchases, but did want to make parent’s aware of this.
If you are looking for a fun Dr. Suess app to help your child connect reading and music, this app may be for you. This app will have special pricing on Friday 02/16/12 as part of the Mom’s With Apps collaborative, so be sure to download it then!
