Dr Panda, Teach Me! by TribePlay is a universal app for children aged three and up. TribePlay was founded in 2008 and creates educational games for the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android and is based in Chengdu, Western China. The app features a variety of animals who help your child lean to count, put puzzles together, match shapes, find the biggest or smallest animal, memory games and numbers. There are ten mini games within the app. Activities get progressively harder as your child masters the skills and earns animals to add to his own personal zoo. The app includes different languages to give your kid the first experience of hearing and speaking German, Japanese, French, Mandarin or Dutch. Named app of the week on Apple’s Appstore in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
I liked the parent control menu which allowed you to turn on and off the various mini games, select the language and turn on or off the music. The puzzle game where you made the various animals was fun though again I wish we could have touched the word frog to hear it while making the puzzle. We also loved all the interactions on the main screen ranging from the frog jumping in the pond, to the chicks hatching and the elephant blowing his jazzy tune. The rewards after completing each set of problems was fun and we enjoyed making our own zoo. The graphics are beautiful and fun to interact with.
In the learn the numbers game I wish you could touch the thought clouds to hear the number again. It would also be nice if kids could touch to count the objects. The arrow on the main screen makes navigation a little confusing since I thought I should touch it to move screens when in fact I had to drag my finger. The sound when you made a mistake was a little bothersome and I would like to see that changed. Future editions of the app could incorporate learning letters as well to promote early literacy skills.
Overall works on a number of skills necessary in preschool and kindergarten. This app makes learning some of those foundational skills fun. A lite version – allowing you to try before you buy is also available. Dr. Panda and TribePlay are certified by the kidSAFE® Seal Program which certifies child-friendly websites and applications including kid-targeted game sites, web-connected devices and other products.
