Naming TherAppy By Tactus Therapy Solutions Ltd. is a word-finding app to help people with aphasia and children with special needs practice important naming and description skills.

Like the other apps from Tactus Therapy Solutions, you begin by customizing the app in the Settings page (and reading the instructions) before choosing from among the 4 activities in this app – Naming Practice, Describe, Naming Test and Flashcards.

Naming Practice
This app has over 400 pictured nouns for a child to practice naming.  Whenever he is unable to name the noun, you can use an evidence-based cueing hierarchy to help him with word retrieval.  Starting from the left button, the cues are:-

  • Description: a short definition for a semantic cue (e.g. a flat paper container)
  • First Letter: the initial grapheme appears with or without number of letters indicated (E_ _ _ _ _ _ _)
  • Whole Word: the complete written word appears on the screen (Envelope)
  • Phrase Completion: a common phrase is heard that ends in the target word (A self-addressed stamped ____)
  • First Sound: the initial phonemes are heard for a phonemic cue (En…)
  • Repetition: hear the word (Envelope)

You can choose to keep a score of the progress and skip any noun that is not familiar.  If you have been keeping score, a summary report appears when you’re done with the session, which you can email to yourself and print for record-keeping.  The summary shows how many nouns were attempted (excluding those that were skipped), how many were correct without cues and how many were correct with help of each type of cues.  However, the results don’t show which nouns were incorrectly named which is fine if you intend to repeat the whole session for more practice.

The target group for this activity is adults who have aphasia, who already knows the names of the nouns but needing help to recall them.  But it can also be turned into a fun and language-filled quiz for children who have language delays.  With the iPad screen turned away from their vision, play the description button for them to guess the answer.  If that doesn’t help, give each cue in turn.  Here, the forward and backward buttons are great for allowing time for a child to respond and for discussions.

Describe
A pictured noun appears on the screen for you to describe.  You can touch it to hear the noun and then ask leading questions (e.g. Wh questions) to guide your child to describe the object or use the prompts displayed around the picture.  In this activity, the app provides 10 different prompts for semantic feature analysis and expanding expression (appearance, taste, sound, make, category, function, shape, size, color, location) but not all are applicable or included for any one noun.  You get between 4-6 prompts instead e.g. What does it look like, What does it sound like, What is it used for, Where do you find it, Who uses it, What type of thing is it?   There are a total of 480+ images of nouns included for this activity.

Naming Test
There are 30 images (from different categories) in this non-standardized screener to test a person’s ability to name items.  You tap on the check or cross buttons to score your child’s abilities to name the items and when you’re done, you can email the report.  It’s a straight-forward test where images are shown one after another with no answers offered.

Flashcards
If you prefer to teach your child before testing him, you can let him learn from the flashcards that are included in this app.  Touch each of them and he can hear the spoken word.  All the images used in the other three activities can be found here and there are additional cards on colors and numbers as well.  I especially like the 107 verbs and 87 adjectives which are now included for free with the recent update!  These are essential for a child’s vocabulary yet we don’t find many apps teaching these.   With a total of 700+ flashcards to use, it is wise to introduce them to your child by categories so that he will learn to see the similarities between the items from the same category.  It would be perfect if the word for the image can be displayed too.  [Quiz question :- What adjective can you teach with this flashcard?]

Other user-centric features added in the recent update are:-

      • Ability to add your own words and images as flashcards and to group them into categories.
      • Child-friendly mode now disables the links on the Home screen that take users out of the app.
      • Addition of a Back button to Naming Practice to allow further discussion of previous targets.

Overall, Naming TherAppy is easy to use and very well-designed. The pictures that Tactus Therapy uses for their apps are also one of the best I’ve seen.  Two of the activities, Naming Practice and Describe, are great strategies to use with children of all ages who have an expressive language delay and they can be used repeatedly over time to achieve better descriptive language.  This is definitely an app to download if you’re working on this area with your child.  Watch the video to see it in action.
