Picture The Sentence HD by Hamaguchi Apps – Review
Reviewed by Mary
Picture The Sentence by is an app for Auditory Processing and language development from Californian based Hamaguchi apps; it was developed by Pediatric SLP Patti Hamaguchi. The app is available in iPhone and iPad versions, this review was done on the iPad version.
The app is used to practice listening skills, using basic pronouns and prepositions concepts, and how to process these parts into a whole sentence. Each part of the phrase is represented by a simple picture e.g. he is cutting the grass would be 3 pictures – a boy, someone cutting, and grass. The child then has to picture putting all those together in their mind and choose a picture of a boy cutting the grass from the presented images. The child picks a picture and drags it into an empty picture frame – if it is correct it will click into place and the sentence will be repeated. If it is incorrect the picture won’t click into place.
There are 3 different levels in the app – easy, intermediate and difficult. On the easy setting visual cues representing the parts of the sentence are presented individually, slowly and stay on the screen. There are 3 pictures to choose from. In the intermediate level the visual cues are presented one at a time and stay on the screen briefly, the speech is fairly slow, and there are 5 pictures to choose from. The difficult level has no visual cues, the speech is fairly rapid and there are 10 pictures to choose from – many of which are very similar.
With all the levels there is a sand timer you can use to work on auditory memory and you can vary the wait time from zero up to 40 seconds. You can also choose from different levels of sentence complexity – from subject + verb up to subject + verb + object + prepositional phrase. You can work on nouns (the boy, the girl, the children) or pronouns (he, she, they) or a mixture of both. You can also choose to have text displayed on the screen. The app has a built in reward – the “Pick-a-Door” game where you open brightly colored doors to try to find the hidden animal – you can set this as a reward after every 3, 5 or 10 correct answers (or switch it off completely). It is a relatively simple concept but my kids LOVE it – they think it is hilarious to hear the animal noise and then have the animal charge out of the open door to say hello. It definitely keeps their interest !
I have been using this app with my almost 5-year-old twins and they don’t realize it is therapy at all -they think it is a game! After using the app I had 3 things on my wish list for it – data tracking, consistent praise for getting the right answer (it was intermittent before) and hearing the sentence spoken again when the right answer is selected. The developer just updated the app and included everything on my wish list!! When you finish a session (or want to change settings) you are given an option to save data – you can then view the settings used, exactly which sentences were correct and which were missed, you can email, print or save the data and you can replay missed items.
I think the developer has done a great job with this app – it is engaging, simple to use, is very adjustable allowing it to be used by students with a range of abilities, and has the ability to track settings and data from multiple students. All this for $9.99 – a real bargain!! Highly recommended!
