It seems that I’ve been reviewing mainly apps for children with special needs but I wish to highlight that apps designed by speech and language pathologists are very useful for the language development of children of all needs. One such app is Preposition Remix by Smarty Ears. It helps children learn 20 most common prepositions while playing and having fun with the app. Prepositions included are above, behind, below, beside, between, closest to, furthest, in, in front of, in the middle, inside, near, next to, on, on top of, out, outside, to the left, to the right and under.
This app is fully customizable to meet the needs of all students. You are able to select just one or a group of prepositions you want your child to play with. Furthermore, you can have the questions related to each preposition to appear consecutively or have them randomized for reinforcement when your child has mastered the prepositions. You can also decide if you want to allow further auditory cues or have written cues as well. The latter are great for encouraging early literacy skills or as an additional input for visual learners.
You can further choose from three types of responses when a wrong answer is chosen. I prefer that there is ‘No Response’ until my son gets a correct answer because I don’t want him to get distracted (and discouraged) whenever he chooses a wrong answer. I want him to continue to try again. But for the first time he used this app, I opted to ‘Keep Going’ to the next question even when he got the answers wrong. At the end of that session, I used the report on the overall accuracy percentage for each preposition tested to find out what prepositions he needed help with. I don’t quite like the third option though. It is a rather loud ‘Buzz’ but this may appeal to some kids.
The play is simple. The child just needs to touch the correct object(s) that has been placed according to the preposition asked in the question e.g. Find the spoons outside of the case. Get it right and you get a positive reinforcement. The app logo may be in cartoon form but you won’t find cartoon pictures inside. Instead, the app uses real pictures so it will appeal to older kids as well.
This app has a total of 200 different questions (10 for each preposition) and that is a lot for learning and practising prepositions! So if you are looking for an app to teach prepositions, do check out Preposition Remix.

How about an event for OT’s???
I
I liked Smarty Ears on FB and shared the review with a comment. As for a theme–how about apps for girls?
I’ve liked Smarty Ears for a while now :-). I shared on Facebook and twitter. In terms of future themes…I was actually just talking about this with my friend who is an OT and she was saying that there is tons of promotions for Better Speech and Hearing Month but nothing for Occupational Therapy Month which is in April, so how about an OT theme :-).
I like Smary Ears on Facebook. As a theme, how about apps for social workers.
1. I Like iMums (and Smarty Ears) on Facebook
2. Shared on Facebook and Pinterest
3. Theme: Maybe expanding use of apps to include non-intended uses (e.g., uploading worksheets to Photo Library, using DoodleMe to have have kids complete them – rather than paper/pencil worksheets)
Thank you iMums and Smarty Ears. I shared this giveaway on twitter and pinterest. I feel like I’m echoing the responses before me. I believe it would be great to have a theme devoted to OT/PT. As an SLP, I have appreciated the attention during BSHM and would love to see my therapy colleagues have the same spotlight!

I’d love to see more ABA based apps for young children.
I had already like Smarty Ears…but I did post on their wall thanking them for supporting iMums. I would love to see a theme geared only towards augmentative communication sources. Oh – I shared on facebook…I don’t know anything about twitter…sorry!
Already like smarty ears on facebook! Trina Hemmerling
I follow Smarty Ears on Twitter and have already liked them on FB. I shared the giveaway on twitter. I love the idea of an OT themed event that others have suggested but I also like the idea of aged based events – there are so many apps out there for preschoolers and young kids – an event that presented the best of the best of those apps would be great. Also, an event for apps focused on older children and adults would be well received I think – given that this population is not always well-served.
I like Smarty Ears on FB as well as follow them on Twitter. I shared your giveaway on Twitter. And another thought for a theme- engaging math and science apps.
Since I don’t have FB and I don’t Twitter…guess I will never be able to win these apps..
I have liked Smarty Ears on fb and shared on fb. An OT theme is a good idea.
Completed Steps 1 & 2 on twitter! I think apps for infant/toddlers or lower functioning children would be a great theme. Some cause and effect apps maybe.
Would love to win to use at school with the kids! Liked on facebook!

I followed Smarty ears on facebook and twitter and I shared this giveaway on facebook. I would really like to see an event geared toward older children and the apps that serve this population. There are a ton of apps for young children, but not so much for young adults/tweens. I know there are many who could use help with this age group.Thank you for this fantastic event!!

I think a great theme would be Educational or Homeschooling Apps.
I have done 1. and 2. and hope to win. I would suggest the next event for iMums would be Inference for Special Needs or Non Verbal Language
