Chow Chat by Shoe the Goose – Review
Reviewed by Alison
Chow Chat by Shoe the Goose is a universal app designed to get a family talking while stimulating critical thinking, sharing of ideas and language development. The app features over 300 discussion cards which start with a fact, quote or proverb to start a discussion. The related questions encourage children and adults to share ideas by not just answering the question but responding with their own thoughts. The cards can be sorted by category and you can add new topics and discussions as well. One sample conversation starter was this one “Blueberry Jelly Belly jelly beans were created for the 1981 presidential inauguration of Ronald Reagan. If you could have a candy company make something special for you, what would it be?”
I liked that the app had no right or wrong answers and was designed to stimulate conversation – we made the questions harder or easier depending on the people we were talking to while using the app. We also used it as an opportunity to learn a bit about family history especially antics related to childhood. One of my favorite facts that I learned was about a friend of mine who I have known since childhood. The app allows you to customize it based on your wants/needs related to specific questions and will help people to articulate a variety of thoughts. I was really surprised to hear some of the things that we discussed as a result of the conversations and learned a bit about family history as well.
I’d love to see different designs on the cards based on categories as well as a randomizer which will allow you to pick multiple categories and “shuffle the cards” enabling conversations and the ability to skip certain questions.
I can see this app being especially helpful for older children who may have challenges with language and articulating their thoughts as well as going beyond, “how was your day at school” and allowing for more in-depth conversations. This app may also solve long silences during car trips and frustration when you ask someone how their day was. I can also see this app being used in a waiting room while waiting for a doctor’s appointment or the like to pass time productively.
