The Champion Hare written by Gwen Christie and brought to the app store by Interact Books is a universal app. When a young hare enters the Animal Sports Competition he soon finds himself racing a cheetah and competing in the long jump against a kangaroo! It’s not easy becoming a champion. He keeps trying and takes part in every event but can’t quite manage to come in first place. At first he is frustrated by never winning, but he comes to accept it and realizes it is fun to just compete. Then the other animals have a surprise for the hare – the ten events he competed in comprise the Decathlon and although he may not have won any individual event he is the overall Champion !!
The app has the text visible on each page and you touch the text box to hear it spoken, there are interactive elements (which you can switch on hints for). The illustrations are bright, cheerful and fun. Overall, this is a very nicely done story of perseverance and very topical at the moment with the Olympics going on.
