Farm Joy & Co by AJA Digital Media is a universal app designed for children aged 3-7 years old. The app opens with a farmyard scene featuring many of the animals you’d anticipate seeing at the farm.
You can choose from four different ethnically diverse farmers and pick the season – fall, winter and spring or summer. In each season it is the same farm scene but with changes to reflect the season e.g. in winter the farmer wears a hat and scarf, there is a woodpile in the shed and snow on the ground, in summer the flowers are in bloom, there are crops in the fields and apples on the tree. You can scroll left and right to see more of the farm scene. By touching each of the animals you can hear their sounds or listen to the farmer say hello. There are different interactive elements in the farmyard scene in the different seasons too. You can touch the tractor to start its engine, pick apples from the tree, build a snowman or clear away fallen leaves and apples.
As well as the farm scene there are also puzzles, a matching game and a find the hidden object game. The puzzles are all pictures of animals from the farmyard and are made up of 7 pieces that click into place when they get close to the right spot. The matching game has 3 levels of difficulty- 12, 16 or 20 cards. The pictures include farm animals, fruits and vegetables, and other things from the farm scenes e.g. a snowman. The fourth activity is a find the hidden object game and is our favorite. It shows the inside of the barn which is crammed full of over 100 objects and the child is challenged to find eight of them. If they get stuck there is a hint button, which will show the location of the missing item by having stars briefly circle it. Each time you play this game the objects to be found are different, and although occasionally we saw the same object come up twice in a row we never saw the same full list twice. The developer says the app is aimed for ages 3-7 years old, we would say that most of the app is best suited to the 3-5 year age group, but the matching and hidden object games will also be enjoyed by older kids. There are a few suggestions we would make for a future update 1) ability to switch off the background music 2) adding some seasonal variations to the mini games e.g. having baby animals in the puzzles for spring and summer and adults in the fall and winter 3) having different objects in the barn in different seasons.
This is a fun app for younger children to learn about farm animals and seasons with the farmyard scene, matching game and puzzles. The graphics and sound effects are well done. The hidden object game was our favorite, it was very well done and some of the objects were challenging even for an adult to find.
