Firstly I just have to say Dan Russell-Pinson is a genius – not only has he produced an educational app (Stack the States) that has kept my 8 year old playing it for a year, but now he has produced Monster Physics a Universal app that kept my two sons busy during an 11 hour plane ride and still keeps them coming back for more over a month later.
The app starts by letting you build your Monster who is your personal crash test dummy for all your experiments. The app can hold five individual player profiles, and each one gets to have their own personalized monster. Once you’ve made your monster you can choose from 3 options 1) Learn 2) Build and 3) Missions. Learn teaches basic physics concepts and terms such as gravity, friction, mass and velocity. In Build you can create any inventions you like using the included parts, and Missions has a series of challenges to complete. I would recommend going through Learn first then Missions, and only do Build once you have learned about how to use the various parts.
Missions are further divided into: Tutorial, Training, Beginner, Challenge and Advanced. In the Tutorial mode each mission teaches you how to use a certain part, then in Training you complete simple tasks such as getting the monster to slide down a slope, before going on to more complex challenges in the other levels. The monsters love to eat fruit and vegetables so many of the missions involve trying to get the monster to his food, so it even encourages healthy eating too! There is a huge range of parts available for you to build with – metal, wood, rubber and plastic shapes, ice, chains, ropes, different joints, rockets, hover bots, magnets, wheel and claws and many more. You can build planes, cranes, helicopters, rockets or whatever your imagination comes up with, and then operate them. The app contains no in-app purchases, social medis links or third party adverts. It does contain adverts for Dan’s other apps with link to the app store, but you do need to click multiple times to follow the link.
This app is aimed at older Elementary school students and does a great job of introducing them to Physics concepts in a fun and engaging manner, however older children and even adults will enjoy it and find it challenging. I introduced my eight-year-old son to this app just before we got on an eleven hour plane journey, he loved it instantly and his five-year-old brother was fascinated by it too. The eight year old then taught his younger brother how to use the app, and the two of them sat side by side for hours playing it – the older brother on the iTouch, the younger on the iPad. The eight year old has now completed all fifty missions and is going back to re-solve them in new ways, and they are both still regularly ask to play it. The instructions are well done but only in written form, in a future update I would like to see audio instructions added to make it easier for kids who can’t yet read. It would also be good to have one solution available for each mission (for most missions there are several ways to solve it), so that if you get really stuck you could learn how to solve that challenge.
Overall, this is a very well done, engaging and innovative physics puzzler. It is great for working on problem solving, critical thinking, fine motor skills and for learning about physics principals. A must have app for all parents of elementary school aged children, and I’d recommend it for adults too, it is a steal at $1.99. There is also a fully functional lite version (with less parts and less missions) available for FREE that gives you a really good idea of what the app is about, and that will by itself provide many hours of entertainment (it also has no 3rd party ads etc)
