Super Why! by PBS Kids is an app modeled after the popular kids television show which helps your child “get the power to read” using four interactive literacy games. Your child plays along with Alpha Pig, Princess Presto, Wonder Red and Super Why while rhyming, spelling, writing, reading and practicing the alphabet. Each of the mini-games helps to focus on a specific skill set and after they are completed gives a reward in the form of a sticker in the sticker book. This app provides your children with early literacy skills which can be helpful for learning to read.
My son enjoyed the Super Why’s Story Saver the Best as it allowed him to select the missing word to fill in the stories and “save the day.” We also used Princess Presto’s Wands-Up Writing quite a bit to practice letter sounds, tracing letters and spelling as well as writing words. We added this app to our summertime practice skills for while my son is not in preschool so that he doesn’t learn any of the skills he has recently learned. The app also has appropriate pauses in it to allow your child to say their answer – to each of the questions. We also used it to practice pronouncing difficult words as well.
If I had any suggestions for the app it would be to add more content. We have had this app for several months now and my son has completed each activity multiple times with his favorite characters. I’d love to see a sequel or additional stories added to the app. I would also like to see settings for each of the games, such as: easy, moderate and hard which will allow you to adjust for your child’s ability.
If your child loves Super Why! on PBS Kids, this would be a great app which allows them to take what they are seeing on television and translate it into skill building. This app makes reading fun! It is a winner of the Parent’s Choice award as well as being featured by Apple at the iPad 2 launch.
