Goodnight ABC by Quasar Alliance, Inc.is a colorful app designed to engage your children in learning their ABC’s using colorful illustrations, animals, and our favorite part the abiliy to put the animals to bed. The app teaches ABC, word recognition, picture recognition, colors, and really allows the child to customize on how they want to play. The app contains 26 cards with each one featuring a different letter of the alphabet and you can choose which one you want to look at, within the app there is navigation at the bottom which allows you to page forward and backward. This app helps to teach colors, numbers, phonics, naming of objects, manipulation, intellectual curiosity just to name a few of the skills. It is an app which really helps the iPad to shine in it’s capabilities to engage, play and interact all in one.
We loved the illustrations in the app for each of the different letters and finding the hidden objects as well as the music at the top of each page. My son really enjoyed the cause and effect of using the switch within the app as well. The interaction for each scene ranging from the animal sounds, to the objects at the top of the screen on strings (which vary from scene to scene) was interactive and gorgeous. We enjoy looking at this app just before bedtime as a way to wind down our busy day and spend time together as a family. When I used this app it reminded me of finding hidden objects as a child where you had to look for a picture to locate them using a full page digital “playroom” of sorts. We also liked how each scene really made you look for the objects and interaction – our favorite was making it snow.
I would like to see the links to Twitter, Facebook and You Tube childproofed. They are currently inside a non-protected section of the app which can be navigated to from the main page with no-double tap required. I would also like to be able to tap on the main object on the page, for example the alligator and have the object’s name pronounced in conjunction with their sound. It would also be nice if the objects in the scene matched the letter that we were focusing on, for example in the bear scene there is a red car – perhaps it could be blue, brown or black to start with a B like other objects on the page. It would also be nice if there was a way to turn it back into daytime without having to go back and re-open the page.
This app is a spectacular addition to your collection especially for learning early word/object association, finding hidden objects, colorful illustrations and the ability to play while learning. My son had no idea he was practicing his ABC’s while he played with the app. The app really appeals to your inner curiosity as you find yourself touching the objects just to see what will happen. This app is best for children age two and older through early kindergarten. There are so many ways you can expand upon the basic concepts that it appeals to a broad audience.
