Maths, age 3-5 by EuroTalk – Review and Giveaway

Reviewed by Grace

Maths, age 3-5 by EuroTalk is a very comprehensive maths app that uses lots of step-by-step tutorials and guided maths practice questions to teach basic Maths concept to children in preschool and kindergarten.  It supports multiple student profiles and has a motivating rewards system that makes it a perfect teaching tool for schools and families with more than one child.

This free app consists of ten topics, the first is included and the other nine topics are available as In-App Purchases (IAP):-

1) Sorting and matching (included)
2) Counting to 3
3) Lines and patterns
4) Counting 4 to 6
5) Where is it? (prepositions)
6) Counting 7 to 10
7) Patterns and shapes
8) Counting 1 to 10
9) Comparing
10) Add and take away

Each topic comes with 7 levels of questions and the student has to complete each level to unlock the next level.  Within each level, the questions increase in difficulty and they are varied for plenty of practice.  The same concept is presented in different ways to help in generalization and the child is exposed to different types of questions pertaining to the same concept.  Each approach comes with a few examples for ample practice.

A teacher figure demonstrates the systematic way to solving each type of Maths questions/activities.  The child is then guided through the process to answering each practice question, step by step.  The pause in between the steps allows the teaching adult to discuss and review the previous step with the child.  There are  audio prompts (available in 5 languages) for all the activities and questions and these  instructions are great for helping to build auditory processing skills and working memory.    The app always recaps what the child has done at the end of a series of similar questions, reinforcing what has been learnt.  There is also a quiz with 10 questions at the end of each topic.  If he gets all of them right, a certificate with his name will be awarded.

As a parent of a child with different learning needs, I really like that each abstract Maths concept is taught in small incremental steps and questions increase in difficulty gradually as helpful learning aids are removed, one at a time.   The pace is just right for my son and everything is bright and colorful yet not cluttered.  The only thing that I don’t like is that the IAP are not child proofed yet.  Of course, this is not an issue if you have disabled IAP in your device’s settings.  If you have not done so, this is the right time to put the IAP restrictions in place.  In any case, your child will benefit the most from this app if you are on hand to guide him.

Wish list:-

  • IAP that are locked and only accessible by the adults.
  • In-app description (or a preview) of what each topic covers.
  • Ability to pick and choose the question/activity we want to work on after the level has been unlocked.
  • Option to display the instructions in words to promote reading.  This is also helpful for visual learners who needs visual cues to remember the instructions.

Overall, Maths, age 3-5 is a very comprehensive and outstanding Maths app that teaches basic Maths concepts using lots of step-by-step tutorials and a wide variety of guided practice questions, suitable for young children of different abilities at home or in school.

Thanks for another great review. In a preschool maths app we look for a simple yet entertaining layout, nice progression between concepts and rewards for correct answers.

  2. Emily says:

I look for apps that can be customized to my individual students’ needs.

  3. Lisa Neely says:

I look for apps that start at a very basic level and work up with small increases in complexity. I believe scaffolding of skills is the best way to build up the skills without missing something along the hierarchy.

  4. Valerie Maples says:

I am always looking for apps that can be used to both work on cognitive and motor skills, so it will be great to see if this will work for kids with disabilities. Thanks for another great review!
