Sight Words Hangman by Marcel Widarto – Review and Giveaway

Reviewed by Grace

Sight Words Hangman by Marcel Widarto uses flashcards and quizzes to help students instantly recognise 400 commonly used words.  These words are grouped into lists of 10 words in increasing complexity.   It works very much like Sight Words & Spelling with Pixopop (also from Marcel Widarto) minus the cute packaging, spelling and custom words features.  It has however more words which are more difficult  and 5 additional word lists related to special occasions – Easter, Valentine, Christmas, Thanksgiving and Halloween.

There are 2 modes to choose  - Flashcards and Hangman game.  After that, you can either select any of the 40 word lists included in the app or let the app choose a random list to learn/play.

With the flashcards, the student can see and hear the words and when they are familiar with the words, you can turn on the quiz mode (where the words are not read out) to encourage the student to recall how the words are read.

In the Hangman game, the student has to choose the correct word (out of 4 options) asked by the app.  With every wrong attempt, a component of the hangman appears.  With 5 wrong attempts, the hangman is complete and the game is over. There are 2 levels of play here – easy or hard which you need to choose from the settings before starting the game.  In the hard level, all the 4 word choices start with the same letter.

On the results page, you can view the results of all the games played.  It shows the list of words tested, date of game, score and status (fail/pass/incomplete). From here, you can further view the detailed results of the individual games played, showing you which words the students selected for each question.

Overall, Sight Words Hangman is easy to play and it’s a useful tool for teaching sight words but once you’ve used Sight Words & Spelling with Pixopop (feature packed with spelling, custom words, tricky word lists and trophies), you’ll find that Hangman pales in comparison.  Unless you’re specifically need a non-distracting flashcards and game app for learning sight words, I would suggest you check out the more fanciful app which costs only a dollar more.
