What we love…
The movement to digital from a print magazine; I really liked that once you purchase a subscription the copies are yours to keep
What we’d love to see…
Ability to use on an iPhone and printable activites
Summary
It provides a colorful, yet not overly stimulating introduction to a digital magazine with fun activities and lots to explore.
Our Rating

BabyBug Magazine by Cricket Magazine Group & Ethervision is an electronic adaptation of the print BabyBug Magazine. This app is designed to be a babies and toddlers’ first app and used with the parents via touch interaction and “read to me” functionality. BabyBug features the same illustrations as in the print magazine, but brought to life in the digital edition via your iPad. The app features links to the Babybug website which provide information on child development and how you can work with your child to get the most out of each issue; “read along” feature for the entire magazine on a page by page basis; sound effects and touchable animation on every page along with an animated Babybug character who serves as your guide to take you through each issue.
We subscribed to the print edition of this magazine and my son loved seeing the digital adaptation of it. He especially enjoyed the coloring activity as well as the ability to sing along in the magazine. I also liked that the stories are short enough for a wandering attention span of a young toddler, while still providing educational content. With my son, I usually tried to take it to the next level once he had mastered the print edition and have him look for specific items on the pages.
In terms of enhancements, it would be great if the app continued to add additional interactive features like colors, shapes, letters and numbers to help introduce early literacy and math skills. I would also like to see the app compatible with an iPhone.
This is a great magazine for young children to begin to explore the world in conjunction with their parents or caregivers. It provides a colorful, yet not overly stimulating introduction to a digital magazine with fun activities and lots to explore.
