Fido’s Treehouse Scavenger Hunt by Little Learning Tots is an interactive app that allows your child to go on a virtual scavenger hunt via a “free play” or “challenge mode” allowing your children to enjoy the thrill of the hunt in this hidden object game.  The “free play” mode is an exploration mode, where there are no “right or wrong” answers and you can wander around the various locations from the backyard, to the treehouse  to the park.  The challenge mode requires children to follow a set of clues in order to achieve game goals.   Skills practiced in this app include: fine motor, speech via the naming of objects, finding hidden objects, time management and creative play.

I really liked that this app could be adapted for children of different ability levels either via the free play or the challenge mode which makes it appeal to a wider audience.  The graphics and artwork in the app were fantastic and made exploring an easy and interactive experience.  My favorite section of the app was in the treehouse although I wish some of the elements like the blocks could have been stacked together to make a tower and more of the objects inside could have been moved around or opened like the books and the items at the bottom of the bookshelf.   A future enhancement to this app could be the addition of another location for the treasure hunt or a secondary mode in the “explore” which provides a map of a variety of objects for your child to locate – although I’d like them to be easier than the challenge mode.  I also really liked that most of the objects reacted to your touch, my son really enjoyed feeding the bird and inflating the soccer ball.  The handwritten treasure maps are well done and make the treasure hunt fun in the challenge mode.

The “for parents” section is great as it provides an overview of the app, but it does provide a link to the iTunes store to rate the app as well as a link to the internet where a game walkthrough is hosted.  I’d like to see this made a double tap so that children can not inadvertently get into this area.  The game walk through can be very helpful if your child has trouble finding one of the objects in the challenge mode.  I also thought that some of the language in the app was a little hard to understand and would have liked it if the clues could be read out loud especially for younger children.

Overall, this app is a good buy for the money and is really good at helping your children find a variety of hidden objects in a non-pressured way   The graphics and artwork along with the ability to hunt for treasure will keep your child engaged and playing for quite a long time.  Fido’s Treehouse adventure is a “free” version of the app which lets you try before you buy the app.  Other apps by this developer include Alphabet Jumbled and Learn to Count.
