Today’s interview is with Rashin of AppTalia (Facebook | Twitter), a mother of two who was unable to find the perfect app for her child so decided to create it herself!
Thank you for participating our interview Rashin! Please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Rashin. I am a computer software engineer and a mother of two. My 3 years old daughter “Talia” inspired me to create apps for children. After 15 years in IT business, I launched AppTalia in March 2012 in my home office in Virginia for children who love to learn and for parents who are also tech-savvy and appreciate the capabilities and enhanced features of digital devices.
How did the idea for your app come about?
As a Persian mother, I was very interested in teaching my children my native language. So I looked for Persian story books in App Store and surprisingly enough, there was none! Then I decided to create the first bilingual (English & Persian) mobile applications for children and AppTalia was born.
And how long was the process from the original idea to the release of the app?
It was about 6 months, the first 2 months I did lots of research finding a great team to work with, read other developer’s success stories, learned about the process of creating an app and so on. Once AppTalia was established, it took roughly 4 months to develop my first app. The other apps are taking less than two months to develop and right now I have 3 apps in App store.
Did you hire a developer or do it yourself?
Creating a professional app is a team work. For each project I create a very detailed storyboard and work closely with an extremely talented team of script writer, graphic artist, music composer, voice talent and developer.
What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome in the development process?
The actual developing process of an app has always been so smooth and fun for me and I really enjoy doing this. Finding time is always the biggest obstacle for me. With two children (10 months old and 3.5 year old) at home, the best time I could find to work was 11pm to 3 am every night! but it all worth it.
Have you had much support during the development process (from family, peers, Apple Inc.)?
Yes – my whole family got involved and so did my friends. I made all of this possible through their constant support and belief.
What are your plans for the future? Will you be developing any more apps?
Yes, I will develop more apps. (bilingual and multilingual) My goal is to create interactive apps to teach the kids worldwide about science, human body and different languages.
What sort of feedback has your app been receiving so far?
I have had amazing feedback. It’s always a great feeling to get a positive review from parents and children. I am very grateful to everyone who got my apps and I hope your children learn from these apps as much as mine do.
And finally, what advice would you give to anyone considering creating their own app?
If you have a great idea for an app, go for it. Don’t give up and have fun :)
