If you have your music collection in iTunes and are looking for a way to enjoy it in full clear stereo wherever you go, Jawbone has a great solution for you- the BIG JAMBOX. BIG JAMBOX is the big brother to the popular JAMBOX – but big is a relative term – it supplies big sound but is still only 10 inches long, less than 4 inches high and weighs just 1.2kg (2.7lb). Jawbone is a San Francisco, California based company known for its wearable technology and audio devices and is a 2010 IDSA Design of the Decade winner.
I’ve had the opportunity to try out the BIG JAMBOX over the last month and I’m in love with it! It has basically replaced my family’s music system - it is so much handier to have our music collection on our iOS devices and just move this little speaker around to where ever we want music.
The BIG JAMBOX connects to your iPhone, iPod or iPad via Bluetooth, and will also connect to any other Bluetooth enabled device. It is really quick and easy to pair it via Bluetooth, and a friendly voice from the speaker tells you when it is in pairing mode, and when it connects. It talks to you when you switch it on, tells you how much battery charge is left and reminds you to charge it when the battery is getting low. Because it connects via Bluetooth you don’t have to worry about different connectors so it works just as well with the iPhone 5 as with the iPhone 4 or iPad. It has a great range too- I’ve used it in the garden where my iPod Touch (and I) were about thirty feet way from the speaker and it still worked great. You can use your iOS device as a remote too- to change the track you are playing or the volume. If you go to Jawbone’s MyTALK website you can download new features, apps and software updates, to keep your Jambox up to date and even pick what kind of voice you want it to talk with.
If you don’t have a Bluetooth enabled device you can still use it- just connect to the headphone jack or audio line out using the included cable. I have used it this way with my (older) laptop and it works well, however the included cable is only 36″ long, so if you plan to use it frequently this way you might wish to purchase a longer cable. You can also use it as a speakerphone if you connect your phone via Bluetooth, and it has a high quality built-in microphone.
You can use it plugged in to the mains, or charge up the rechargeable battery and use it wirelessly anywhere. The battery takes about 2 1/2 hours to charge and lasts up to 15 hours in use, or 500 hours standby between charges. This is really handy for taking it out and about in the garden, on the beach or anywhere on the go.
The sound quality from this little speaker is amazing, and it can put out a lot of volume – its loud enough to use for a party and it sounds big and booming when turned up, but still crisp and clear at lower volumes too. The technical description says it has precision-tuned drivers and dual passive bass radiators, plus LiveAudio™ technology for 3-D sound. That’s all a bit technical for me, so I’ll just tell you it sounds great!
The Big Jambox comes in three colors each with a different grill pattern- red dot, white wave and graphite hex. I tested out the red dot – it is very cool looking and even all the wires and charger match the speaker’s red. The speaker looks very stylish and well made too – the red steel grill wraps around the speaker and it has coordinating rubbery ends, feet and buttons.
I would very highly recommend this speaker – the sound quality is excellent and the volume is loud enough to fill the room even for a party or BBQ. I love the Bluetooth connectivity and the rechargeable battery – it is so handy to be able to use it totally wirelessly, and you can take it anywhere. Even though it delivers big sound, it is small and light enough to take along when you travel too. We had a rather outdated music system, that desperately needed replacing and I had been searching for the perfect solution to replace it. For our family the BIG JAMBOX is that perfect solution.
