Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota – MaypopDesigns (Facebook | Twitter) is busy spreading the word about their first iPhone/iPod Touch app – theGames: Sporty Mind Puzzles. This colorful educational game app is aimed at kids ages 5 and older looking to develop their mental fitness.
theGames: Sporty Mind Puzzles features a unique game play method in which the player is playing two puzzles at once. By solving a visual matching puzzle, a picture puzzle is completed. The player can self-check his or her work at any point during the game and redo an answer if need be.
Simple black brush-stroke expressions represent 18 dynamic Summer Games sports, such as cycling, diving, gymnastics, judo, running, sailing, tennis and volleyball. Each contestant has the choice of playing all 18 spatial-relationship matching puzzles or focus on just a few, depending on age and/or ability. This makes for a versatile game that can grow with the user and support multiple family members.
The game play begins by showing an example question square and the corresponding answer square for the game topic. This example tab slides off to the side and can be accessed at any time to refresh the player’s memory. Then the question squares display one at a time at the top of the screen while the bottom two-thirds of the screen shows a 9 square grid of answer squares. Players tap the corresponding answer to the displayed question. There are 18 different types of visual perception questions, such as, matching various rotations of an image, finding the full image when presented with the half image, distinguishing obscured and distorted images and matching pattern groups.
When a question is answered, the answer square pops off-screen to a larger 9 square puzzle. If the answer is wrong, the puzzle piece is in the wrong place. A player can check his or her answers by looking at this puzzle and start over if need be. This gives kids a chance to self-correct and re-enforce the correct answers. Isn’t it nice to know where you went wrong?
Along with a stadium crowd cheering along accomplishments, progress is shown by collecting a colorful array of the sporty icons, and once a player has run through all those levels: GOLD STARS!
