What we love…

This app targets key language skills (vocabulary, listening comprehension and sentence formation), has adaptive game levels, is highly motivating and truly educational.

What we’d love to see…

Option to have text display for the vocabulary words, parts of sentences and instructions. Separate full version app with no IAP.

An affordable and top language app, it’s unlikely that you’ll get the same amount of content and features for the same price in another app. Highly recommended.

Our Rating

i Learn With Boing: Ocean Adventures! by Tribal Nova is an exceptional language app that scores high on fun factor, student engagement and educational value. It is free to download with the first game included while two other games are unlocked with an in-app purchase (IAP) of $ 1.99 (on sale at $0.99 for launch).

Game 1

The Octopus is a hidden objects game (spanning across 2 pages) that focuses on vocabulary words.  There are 3 levels in this game – Level 1 teaches the names of the objects, Level 2 their categories (animals, clothing, vegetables, food, kitchen items, stationery, toys, musical instruments, sports, modes of transportation, tools and furniture) and Level 3, the function of these objects (things that roll, we can eat, etc.)

In this game, your child is asked to find 4 hidden objects named or described by Boing, one at a time and these are collected by the Octopus.  Boing will say the name of the object when the correct item is found and tapped.  Once all the 4 objects have been collected within the time limit, the Octopus will juggle them and the game continues to the next round.  This game also tests your child’s memory as he needs to recall the location of the objects he saw earlier.

Game 2
In the Clown Fishes game, your child is instructed to place 4 clown fishes at the right places to watch them dance.  There are spots on the screen to show the possible places where he can put the clown fish and in Level 3, left/right hand prompts appear to help the child learn left and right.  This activity helps a child to understand and follow instructions relating to spatial concepts (in, on, in front of, behind, next to, under, to the left/right) and it also helps develop a child’s auditory processing skills as he needs to listen, understand, remember and respond to directions which contain up to 5 words – verb, noun, prepositions, colors and size depending on the level of difficulty.

Game 3
The Crabs game lets your child learn to form grammatically correct sentences by arranging nouns, verbs, prepositions and adjectives (all color-coded for additional cues) in the right order.  The sentences formed are silly in nature and are great fun to watch when they are acted out in a short animation.   Level 1 starts with 2 nouns and a verb to form a basic sentence structure and as your child progresses through the levels, he is given more choices to create his own silly sentences.  What is amazing is that there are many combinations of sentences that can be created yet the the app has an animation for each and every sentences that can be created! This game can be played alone or in a two-player mode (for parent-child or peer-to-peer gameplay).

Adaptive game levels
In all the 3 games, the player needs to pass Level 1 to unlock Level 2 and then pass Level 2 to unlock Level 3.  Once unlocked, he can have unlimited rounds of play in that level and each round presents different sets of words, instructions and sentences.  As your child plays, the app automatically adjusts the level of difficulty of each game to match his ability.  It also makes recommendations on which game level for your child to play at the beginning of every session based on his past success rate .

Progress reports
To take advantage of the progress tracking features, you need to create an account from within the app.  After registration, you can follow the learning progress of up to 4 children profile for each account through the app’s Parents Center and regular email updates.  The progress report shows the total number of attempts you child has made and the average success rate for each game level.  You can also compare his success rate with other children in the same age group.  All the iLearnWith series of apps are integrated via the Parents Center allowing you to see each child’s progress in the other apps and even access these apps directly from here, provided you own these apps as well.

The games in Ocean Adventures are very motivating for the players.  Kids are immediately rewarded with a show when they complete a round of game within the time limit  – the Octopus juggles the 4 hidden words found, the 4 Clown Fishes dance under the spotlights once they are placed at the right spots, the sentence come alive in a theater when a grammatically correct sentence is formed.  For every 3 rounds completed successfully, the child is rewarded with a silver or gold medal depending on the average time he took to complete them.  Then there are the 27 gifts which kids can earn and these are proudly displayed in Boing’s spaceship.

The whole rewards systems of iLearnWith apps are integrated just like the progress tracker (if you have an account and wifi enabled).  All the gifts your child has earned from completing the various game levels are automatically added to Planet Boing (free app) which is an incredibly fun place for children to play in.

Wish list:-

  1. Option to have text display for the vocabulary words, parts of sentences and instructions. These visual cues will be very helpful for visual learners while the text display for the vocabulary words teaches the written word for each item.
  2. Ability to adjust the time limit for the games to cater to children of different levels of abilities.
  3. A separate full version app with no IAP which makes it easier for institutions to purchase.

i Learn With Boing: Ocean Adventures is perhaps the most outstanding app among Tribal Nova’s iLearnWith series of cross curricular game-based learning program for school readiness. Besides being very well designed and supported by a useful progress tracking system for parents plus a highly motivating rewards system for children, this app delivers a huge amount of high quality content giving a long term play and educational value.  Each of the games targets a key language skill and is in-depth enough to make a stand-alone app.  At $1.99 (launch price $0.99) for a 3-in-1 language app, i Learn with Boing: Ocean Adventures is definitely a must-have app for language development.
