Our Rating

Let’s Make a Rhyme by Short Bald and Lanky is a iPad app which let’s your children change well known nursery rhymes. The app company, Short Bald and Lanky was created in early 2012 and is an independent mobile application development company. The app takes well known nursery rhymes, like Humpty Dumpty, Three Little Pigs, Little Miss Muffet and Incy Wincy Spider, Three Blind Mice. The differentiation for this app let’s you make them into your own Mad Libs version complete with fill in the blanks and a variety of interactive games including puzzles, a paint palate and the ability to write your own stories using a story creator. The app practices early literacy, reading, fine motor and creativity skills. Of note, even though the app descriptions mentions in-app purchases they developer decided to release a full version instead.
The graphics in this app are gorgeous and are very well done. They appeal to children with the brightness, animation and movement. The background illustrations in the app are simple within the nursery rhymes and a Mad-Lib’s way of filling in the blanks. My son and I had a great time trying to think of funny things we could put into the blanks and reading the story. We also enjoyed the various puzzles, but by far our favorite part was making our own story in the StoryCreator. The app includes a huge library of stickers to help you create your own story which you can then save, change or play back over and over again. We had fun designing our own characters and writing the story.
I wish the app featured narration and word highlighting as this would be very helpful for young readers. It would also be nice if the iTunes rating did not automatically pop up as this pulls you directly into the iTunes store. In addition, it would be nice if the various background characters made sounds like the horses making a neigh sound in Humpty Dumpty. The credits section does include links to various social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, iTunes and their own website, so it would be nice if that was a double tap or some way protected so that children could not get in there accidentally.
This is a great app for you to use with your child. It encourages creativity with a twist on the familiar nursery rhymes. This app is best suited for children preschool age and older although younger children would likely enjoy it as well, but may not understand the story creator other than it being virtual stickers.
