Our Rating

Magikid Umbrella by Magikid is a bilingual (English/Simplified Chinese) app consisting of a charming story about umbrellas, a rainy day song and a rainwear dress up game all presented in 3D and packed in a gift box.
The gift box opens to reveal a 3D miniature theater of changing scenes with people and props to tell Fiona’s story. It’s raining and Fiona is on her way to school when she observes that many objects work like umbrellas keeping people and animals dry. The story ends with Fiona showing the reader how to make a paper umbrella for a teddy bear. It’s a simple and short story with gentle background music, light animations, narrated text and a few interactive spots. The distinct style of Magikid illustrations is immediately recognizable but the presentation of the story this time is unique and refreshingly different.
This story reminds me of my favorite childhood activity on rainy days when I would look out of the window watching the world go by and imagining the stories of the people I saw from afar. It also reminds me of how I can foster my children’s observational skills and imagination by encouraging them to use all of their senses and engaging them in active imagination, just like Fiona in the story.
The bonus dress up game lets your child dress Fiona in 5 matching sets of raincoat, rain boots and umbrella. This is a great opportunity to do color matching but then you child may decide to pick pieces of different colors just for fun. The app also includes a music player which plays a rainy day song in Chinese (English recording coming soon!) about the sounds that you hear on a rainy day. It would be great if the lyrics are displayed too.
I have reviewed two of Magikid’s best-selling apps -Magikid Stage and Magikid Train and I must say Magikid Umbrella is not as exciting as the former two, but every good quality app has its place on a child’s iPad/iPod. Magikid Umbrella’s thoughful story, pretty illustrations, pastel colors, pitter patter sounds of the rain and soothing music has a calming effect on the reader and it is a nice app for a pleasurable read.
