Barbara, thank you for participating our interview. Please tell us a little about yourself.
Smarty Ears is a company founded by Speech-Language Pathologist, Barbara Fernandes. We have been creating apps for children with speech and language delays for the past three years. Currently we have 50 apps on the app store, in English, Spanish & Portuguese.
How did the idea for your app come about?
The ideas come from the professional experience of working with children with speech and language delays.
And how long was the process from the original idea to the release of the app?
We have been in the market of creating apps since before the iPad was even announced. We have been creating apps for the past several years and each one of our 50 apps available has taken a different amount of time to complete based on its complexity.
Did you hire a developer or do it yourself?
We now have a team of three programmers.
What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome in the development process?
The hardest part has been to make sure our apps continue to grow with each generation. Maintaining a high quality level on our apps is the most important goal for us.
Have you had much support during the development process (from family, peers, Apple Inc.)?
We have a team of professionals in our advisory board. They are parents, teachers and therapists all involved in the development process of our apps. Our apps are all managed and created by Speech Language Pathologists, which is what sets us apart from other developers.
What are your plans for the future? Will you be developing any more apps?
We have been working on our upcoming app called ” Language Adventures” which we hope it will be released in December, 2012.
What sort of feedback has your app been receiving so far?
The feedback we have received has been amazing. At our last conference, a user came to tell us that she had tried some other ” less expensive” apps, but the quality is just not the same as Smarty Ears apps. Well worth the purchase.
Thank you so much for talking with us today and sharing a bit about your company. We really appreciated the chance to get to know you!
