Today’s interview is with Meg Price of HR Inside.  Please visit her website, Facebook and Twitter pages.  Please be sure to check out her video interview on YouTube as well.

Meg, thank you for participating our interview. Please tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, my 11 year old daughter, Sara is the creator of our app. She is a typical year 5 student who loves her iPod Touch and her mum’s iPad. Her 9 year old and 7 year old brothers helped her create the app – it was her youngest brother who insisted there should be a game mode because some kids are mostly happy and at times just want to play games!

How did the idea for your app come about?
Sara created the idea in a PowerPoint version for a school project of healthy body healthy mind. Her aim was to provide a fun tool for children to challenge their negative thoughts and see things more realistically and maybe even be more optimistically.

When we thought about making this into an app we were really surprised to find there are so few apps to help children be more optimistic and resilient.
Sara originally created this idea 2 years ago in Year 3. Earlier this year we were using the idea to help our boys and other friends work through their worries and negative emotions. Driving home from school one day I said wouldn’t it be great if positive penguins was an app and we could access it any time we felt bad! So it has taken us about 6 months to develop it into an app and for our penguins to come to life.

And how long was the process from the original idea to the release of the app?

Did you hire a developer or do it yourself?
Yes we hired a developer.

What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome in the development process?
There is such a HUGE learning curve about the app world!

Have you had much support during the development process (from family, peers, Apple Inc.)?
The whole family have been involved as it is our project so in a way it has made it more fun and brought us all together with a common interest.

If we can help one or two children understand they choose how they feel and they can challenge their thinking and change the way they feel – we will be successful

What are your plans for the future? Will you be developing any more apps?
If you ask my children – they would say yes yes yes… – our bank account may not agree

What sort of feedback has your app been receiving so far?
It has only been live a few days but have had excellent feedback and that has been very exciting and great to see the kids so thrilled with all their work.

And finally, Meg what advice would you give to anyone considering creating their own app?
Go for it – life is short and if you have a passion for something you have to give it a go.

Thank you so much for talking with us today and sharing a bit about your company.  We really appreciated the chance to get to know you!  Be sure to check out their TV appearance as well!

Alison, the American iMum is from Massachusetts. She lives there with her sons and husband. In their spare time, they enjoy playing outside, enjoying nature and of course testing apps and fantastic products on their devices. They have a variety of devices including an iPad, iPhone, and an iPod and is often found with a device! My older son loves technology and loves testing out the “latest and newest” apps and tech. I love sharing information about apps and products with others to help them make decisions without feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices.
