MyMathBook by Innolance, Inc is an iPad only app which helps your child practice early math skills, fine motor skills, shape and color identification. The app also includes a “test” section which helps parents understand areas which might be difficult for their children. This app is designed for preschoolers and early grade school children to help them learn basic math concepts while entertaining them and reinforcing core skills. The app features: learning numbers, learning to count, tracing numbers, addition, subtraction, find the missing numbers, tracing shapes, coloring shapes, identifying shapes, missing numbers (sequencing), addition (test), subtraction (test), identify the shapes (test). The app has up to four “players” so that you can work with multiple children and the app while keeping their data separate.
The app had lots of bright colors and was engaging for my son as it was broken into several sections which made the app easy to navigate and helped us focus on a specific skill. The language and pronunciation in the app were well done and easy to understand for children. He really enjoyed the find the missing numbers maze, though it would have been easier for him if it was just one number missing in between each sequence rather than multiple. The concepts explored in the app are simple and engage your child in learning while helping them to understand early math skills.
In terms of improvements, in the “learn numbers” section it would be nice to tap on the teddy bears and be able to count them out loud which would reinforce sequencing and early counting skills for children. This was available in the learn to count section, but it only counted “two” rather than saying one and two. In the “trace the numbers” section, there were times that my son went outside the lines of the numbers and it told him he did a “great job” and other times it forced him to retry even if the drawing was similar. I’d like to see the app requiring you to stay within the lines for the numbers. It would also be nice if you could pick the width of the crayon. Of note, my son had a much easier time tracing with the stylus versus using his finger for tracing. In the “color the shape section” it would be nice if the app required most of the shape to be filled in, currently you could put a “dot” or random line in it and it would be counted as a “colored in shape”. It would also be great in a future version if you could save the data and testing from your child to track progress over time.
The app does contain external links under the “menu” button but your child will have to look for them. They include an email address and website address. I would like to see these require a double tap – or even better a lock of some sort with a math problem which would ensure that young children would not get into this section in error. This app is best for preschoolers and early grade school children practicing early math skills. The graphics and “badges” make it fun for your child to do math and practice tracing, shapes, colors and more. Be sure to try the lite version for a free peek at the app.
