The Turkey Who Forgot How to Gobble from Alexis Purcell – Review
Reviewed by Alison
The Turkey Who Forgot How to Gobble from Alexis Purcell is a delightful adaptation of her book about Joey the Turkey and his journey after having a minor mishap with an apple. This universal book app is available in both English and Spanish and features a “read to me” and “read to myself” method of using the app. The app features Joey the Turkey who is hit on the head with an apple and forgets how to gobble. His friends Lisa, Rudy the Rooster, Patrick the dog, Minnie-moo the cow, Wiskers the cat and Gillie the turkey try to help him remember how to gobble with some unexpected results.
The illustrations in this app are bright and colorful and really help children to engage with the app. My son laughed as he saw all of the different ways that Joe tried to re-learn his gobble. Our favorite in the app was Minnie-Moo teaching Joey how to Moo instead of gobble. The app really showed how important it was for children to help each other practice and learn skills together with sometimes unanticipated results. We liked reading the story in English and then flipping over to read it in Spanish and understanding the various Spanish names for Cat, Cow, Turkey, and Rooster. The narration was done very well and the sounds helped to bring life to the story.
I really liked that you could turn on and off the music within the app as it did help my son to concentrate on the app more fully. I would like to see more interaction within the app, perhaps when Joey is in the front practicing his dog gobble, Minnie-Moo could Moo as well as word-highlighting. It would also be great if more of the objects within the app did something when touched as my son tried touching the cow or other objects hoping to hear them named like “flower” or “fence” but they were not.
At the end of the story, the final page features a “teachers” button which when clicked provides an email address so that teachers can receive extra materials from the author. The link requires that the person wishing to email manually type in the emailaddress into an email or web browser; young kids are not able to access the email directly via a hyperlink. This app is a delightful way to talk to your children about friendship, working hard, perseverance and most of all that friends will be there when you need them. This is a great app to use for talking to your children about Thanksgiving and tying the story to Joey and how all of his friends helped him re-learn his gobble.
