Pirate Scribblebeard’s Treasure with Oscar & Josephine by Kidoodle Apps – Review

What we love…

Fun, creative and silly, encourages children to use their imagination and think outside the box. The partly drawn doodles are less intimidating than a blank page and I love how the doodles come to life.

What we’d love to see…

More color choices

Summary

One of my all-time favorite art apps. Children and adults can have a lot of fun with this app creating silly, funny pictures and seeing them come to life. It really encourages imagination, creativity and fun!

Pirate Scribblebeard's Treasure with Oscar & Josephine by Kidoodle Apps
Pirate Scribblebeard’s Treasure with Oscar & Josephine is an iPad only app by Kidoodle Apps. It was an iTunes Educational Staff Favorite 2012!
and winner of the Best Entertainment App of the Adobe® AIR® App Challenge. This isn’t a new app to me, but one I’ve owned for over a year. When I first bought it I thought it was an incredibly well-done and imaginative app, and as I still think so over a year later I feel it’s about time I shared why!
Pirate Scribblebeard is inspired by a doodle book, and the developer has taken that idea and combined it will all the wonderful things an iPad can do. The result is a doodle book about pirates that totally comes to life. Each page has a partly drawn doodle, then Oscar, Josephine or one the the pirates pop up to say something about it, e.g. “Ahoy I’m Pirate Josephine and I need two burly pirates for my crew”. The artist then completes the doodle however they like, and once the drawing is complete the scene comes to life with animation, sound effects and even dialog.

There is a lot of humor in the app too – for instance once you finish your pirate flag a cannonball whizzes through it, and in other scenes you get to make a sea monster based on a banana and a pirate ship from a bathtub.

The app is accompanied by lively nautical music and fun sound effects. I really like how the app helps the artist to get started by providing a start to the drawing which is much less intimidating than a blank page, and it leaves them plenty of room to exercise their imagination.

The one improvement I would like to see is more color choices – there are currently 8 choices – black, white, red, yellow, blue, green, orange and brown, my daughter would really love to see pink and purple added !
