Able AAC by Ablevox – Review & Giveaway

Reviewed by Brenda S.

What we love…

I love the ease of getting started and clean lay-out of the AAC and Tasks section.

What we’d love to see…

I would like to see easier access to self-help and voice samples within the app.

Summary

I find the AAC and Tasks sections of Able AAC to be solid, useful and easy to navigate. I would suggest in-app help or links to help on the Ablevox website.

Our Rating

Able AACAble AAC, by Ablevox is an easy to use and customize Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) app that has additional helpful features built-in that can make it stand out in a crowded app store. The app comes preloaded with 3 voice engines and the option to purchase 79 others in 20 languages, as well as the ability to record your own. The AAC is split into sections depending on user preference; Simple Interface, which contains over 30 preformed sentences, Advanced Interface for creating more intricate sentences (150 core words and 620 fringe words) and it also contains a Type and Speak keyboard section that is fully functional after a voice engine purchase. In addition to the AAC, it has the unique features of My Tasks (with subcategories of School, Home, Notes, My Points, Reward Center), My Video and My Audio.

iPhone Screenshot 2The AAC is attractive and easy to get started as well as navigate. As far as this section is concerned, it is very well-made and perfectly able to stand-alone as a good find. The My Tasks section is a very nice addition that can remove the need to place schedules and goals in separate apps, which can become tedious for parents and educators. Each subcategory can be further reduced by day and checked off as accomplished. I also appreciate that this section has an option to generate and email reports. The app also has a nice feature where the users information can be readily accessed including name, address, phone and medical information.
There is a passcode section, but I was disappointed that I was unable to make it work until getting a handhold from the developer. It was very simple once it was shown to me and involved drawing a line – you can see more details about how to do this in the instructions on their website.  In addition, I also had problems with the My Video Section, but I also needed to be shown how to work this section correctly. Again, in hindsight, it’s very simple but not as intuitive as the developer might assume. I was excited to see this feature as it could be highly useful as a video-modeling area or even as a demonstration section for speech therapy. The Ablevox website is very helpful and contains video demonstrations as well as samples of the Acapela Voice engines that are available for purchase. The voice demos are flash-based, so visiting on a pc or within a flash-enabled app are necessary. I would like to have easier access to user manuals and voices from within the app without having to contact the developer. Perhaps a help section or link to the Ablevox web page could be added.

  1. Jeff T. says:

Thank you for the drawings and supporting us parents.

  2. I would like to win this app for my son who is 7 and non verbal. I think it would help significantly with language and the different environments he frequents, school, home, speech, ABA etc. Also I think my tasks looks very interesting!

  3. Karen Tolman says:

I love that his has the emotions at visual ready! This would be great for the ipad mini on the go!

  4. Helen Wagner says:

I would like to win this for a student at school. It looks perfect for him.

  5. Emily says:

As an SLP in the public schools, this would be a welcome addition to my therapy materials. It would be used to determine if AAC is a viable tool for my students.

  6. Mindy says:

I would like to win this app to use as an assessment tool.

  7. Frances A. says:

I would love to win this app because I can support the trifecta, children, teachers/SLP’s and parents. Working with over 80 students gives me the ability to help and support. I know this would be amazing for so many of my students!

  8. Frances A. says:

The hardest routine is to keep the routine scheduled. Students are self motivated when learning with technology but they have to remember we do a lesson, then they go to a workstation, then free choice then to transition into their next period.

  9. Allison says:

I would love to win this for my 3 year old son with dyspraxia. We have just started working really hard with using apps on our ipad to help him with his speech and communication.

  10. Becki says:

My 3 y/o loves his apps but we don’t have a proper AAC, he’s nonverbal and could really use this!

  11. Cindy says:

This would br great for my son!

  12. Angie Gorz says:

My son has limited verbal skills, Autism, Apraxia, Primary Speech delay and CP. The language he does have is hard to understand at best. I would love to try this with him. He has responded to much smaller AAC programs in the past, and he gets very frustrated when you cannot understand what he says.

  13. Katrena says:

I have a 10 year old who is mostly nonverbal and has some significant cognitive issues and so I’m always on the lookout for an easy to use AAC that we will be able to make work for him

  14. Laura says:

I’d like to win this app to use with my non-verbal daughter. Any app that can enable her to communicate her wants or needs can only reduce her frustration and improve her attitude.

  15. karen hinkle says:

this would help my grandson who has autism we could really benifit from this app

  16. Jocelyn says:

I can see this product helping students that I work with in schools and in private work. I have seen and reviewed this app before and would love to have a chance to try the full version. I think it is a really great product.

I’m a School S-LP and would LOVE to win either of these apps as I think a number of my students would benefit from using it! :) It really looks GREAT!

  18. Mary Charleton says:

I would love to win this app to give it forward to an Adult Day Service catering for 6 non verbal young men between the ages of 18 and 21. They would benefit greatly with this AAC app to help them communicate their needs, and to understand the daily schedules. They have just got an iPad and need apps to get them started on assistive technology. Thank you for this opportunity.

  19. Christy says:

I would like to win this app in order to help my six year old son, Nathan. He is behind in most areas in part due to a rare bone disease. He is getting ready to have his third major surgery this Friday and will be out of school for 4-6 weeks. I think it would be a great tool that he could take with him in order to better help people understand him.

  20. Dawn says:

How cool would this be? My daughter is completely non verbal. 9 years old. Just got an iPad. Super excited!

  21. Evelina K says:

Think this would help our family since my son has speech delay and PDD.

  22. Evelina K says:

The hardest routine for us is any transition with our son. This app could help us assist with transitions and communication.

  23. elaine says:

I’d like this app for ny non verbal son, to help him communicate

  24. This app would be wonderful for a classroom of nonverbal students that I work with.
