What we love…

The animations and sounds within the app are well done and it is great.  The app practices memory matching and is appealing to children with the animations and their want to correctly match the cards so that the animals have a cleaner home.

What we’d love to see…

Ability to add/reduce number of cards based on your child’s ability level as they get harder and children may get frustrated

Summary

This app appeals to toddlers (with parent’s help) through preschool years and helps them to learn the importance of recycling, helping to maintain the environment and provides a stepping stone to help them understand the importance of taking care of our planet.

Our Rating

Gro MemoGro Memo is a new app developed by Swedish app developer Gro Play.  They are based in Stockholm Sweden and offer not only digital toys, but also eco-educational toys, games and content.  They were recently award the Swedish Living Green Award of 2012.  Gro Memory is an app designed to help animals clean up their polluted homes via a memory match game where you pair animated cards which show animals in nature and make the trash disappear – that is unless you get a “bad” card such as a oil factory which stops your progress and gives you a bad oyster at the bottom.  There are two habitats, the forest and the sea and as they are cleaned up, the animals become happy in their natural environments again.  The app has 29 different animals which appear on the cards and within the habitats.  The app is a simple memory match game – and as you finish each memory match game you earn a pearl or two depending on how many turns of the card it takes.  You must have at least two pearls to advance to the next set of cards.

The animations and sounds within the app are well done and it is great.  The app practices memory matching and is appealing to children with the animations and their want to correctly match the cards so that the animals have a cleaner home.  The memory practice of remembering what is on each card gets progressively harder as the levels progress within the app.

In terms of enhancements, I’d like to have the ability to reduce the number of cards so that it would appeal to both younger and older children.  Younger children sometimes get frustrated when they complete a set of cards, only to find out that they have not earned the requisite two pearls to progress to the next level – it would be nice to have a “bypass option” so that younger children could still progress forward.  In addition, I’d like to see a way to save your progress as when you close out of the app, all of your progress is lost.  I’d also like to see more levels within each habitat to provide for longer playing time.

This app appeals to toddlers (with parent’s help) through preschool years and helps them to learn the importance of recycling, helping to maintain the environment and provides a stepping stone to help them understand the importance of taking care of our planet.
