iTooch Elementary School by EduPad- Review
iTooch Elementary School | Math, Language Arts and Science worksheets for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade is a universal app from French app developer eduPad. It is a free app containing sample lessons from their full range of educational apps for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, the full apps are available as in-app purchase or as separate standalone apps. They contain no adverts or social media links. iTooch also has a middle school version that covers Grades 6,7 and 8. All of their apps are designed to teach material to US common Core Standards, and the apps were developed in collaboration with teachers. “Tooch” is the cute little cartoon character that guides the student through the app.
iTooch Elementary covers grades 3-5 and for each grade it has lessons available for Language Arts, Science and Maths. When you start using the app you need to choose which titles you wish to download e.g. 3rd Grade Maths or 5th Grade Science. You can download as many of them as you wish, you just need to choose them individually. The full curriculum for each title includes 40-60 lessons and 1,500- 4,500 activities, you can access 6-10 chapters of each title for free. It is worth reading the introduction before you start using the app, as there is a lot of useful information in there. To change between subjects or grade levels you need to touch the + button, that takes you to your library where you can download sample lessons and buy the full versions.
I took a closer look at the 3rd grade lessons and tested them out with my 3rd Grader, these are the included subject areas :
3rd Grade Science includes : Physical Science, Life Science and Earth Systems.
3rd Grade Maths includes: Numbers and Operations; Fractions, Decimals, Money; Geometry; Measurement and Data; and Graphs and Statistics.
3rd GradeLanguage Arts include: Writing and Composition; Reading; Research and Reasoning; Vocabulary Booster and Communication.
Within each set of topics you can access the first two lessons for free, you can also see the titles of the other lessons to get an idea what topics are covered in the full version. When studying a topic the child can choose either practice mode or test mode. In either mode touching Tooch will bring up the lesson. In practice mode you can answer as many questions as you like, there is no penalty for skipping questions and you earn points for each correct answer. In test mode the answers are timed – you have 60 seconds to answer each question, and there are 6 questions in each test. At the end of each test the student earns points based on the number of correct answers, and can get bonus points for speed. I like the fact that the questions are constantly changing, so if the student studies a section and gets some questions wrong, then repeats the section they are tested on the same material, but the actual questions are different. This means they learn the material rather than memorizing the answers. Each time they answer a question Tooch responds he may toot a horn or bring flowers for a correct response or bury his head in his hands for a wrong answer – which adds a fun touch. Students can also earn achievements and badges, and there is game center integration. The questions are presented in a variety of forms – some are multiple choice, others are fill in the blank or underline the correct answer. If the student wants to make notes there is a chalkboard (accessed by tapping on the pencil icon) which is a very useful way of always having scratch paper handy especially for the maths questions.
My son has been studying the Science portion of the 3rd Grade app this week and has been really interested in learning from it. I see him going back and retaking sections until he gets perfect scores – so it definitely has him interested and motivated to learn new things (he has chosen topics that they haven’t yet covered at school).
There are some changes I would like to see in a future update – I would like multiple player profiles, as a parent of twins that is especially important for me, but I think other users would find it helpful too. I’d also like an option where the lesson always comes up at the start of a section, before the questions, as I think it’s very useful for the student to be prompted to read the lesson before starting.
Overall, I think the iTooch elementary school series of apps are very well done educational apps. The free app includes enough material to give you a good idea of what the full app is like, and you can see the list of topics covered in the full version. The full apps are a good value for the amount of material they cover. These apps are useful both for homeschooling parents, school use in the classroom and supplementing classroom learning. My son found them engaging, and I liked being able to easily see what he has been studying, and how he is doing. Highly recommended.
The iTooch elementary app is a free download, and the full version of each title is an IAP which is currently $4.99 per title. You can also purchase the individual titles as stand alone apps, and there are stand alone apps containing all the Maths, Language Arts and Science lessons for each grade, these are currently $11.99 each.
