Laser Pegs were one of the “hot” Christmas toys for 2012 and I can see why! Here are a few awards that Laser Pegs has recently gotten: Dr. Toy rated Laser Pegs as one of the 10 best tech toys and top 100 toys!, Parenting Magazine gave Laser Pegs their 2011 “Toy of the Year” Award and they were featured on the NBC Today show four times in 19 months! Laser Pegs® are a unique building toy which light up when they are connected together. The toys help your children with skills such as problem solving, pattern recognition, creative thinking, math skills and more. Now you can not only build with the physical Laser Pegs® toys you can also build using their free app which allows you to build models in 3D, create and share manuals for building different objects, play a variety of games and more. Laser Pegs® is the first construction toy set which allows you to connect one peg to a power source and then illuminate any other peg it is connected with. You can design and build towers, cars, rocket ships, planes, bugs and anything you can imagine using them. Children can develop and refine fine motor skills using the pincer grasp, hand strength, learn cause and effect by “plugging in the pieces” as well as use hand-eye coordination to pick up and place each block while building.
My son has made a few creations which he puts on his night stand and uses as a funky night light which he can change up as he pleases. I like it because I can easily “unplug” it during the night while not using up too many batteries! Laser Pegs connect together very securely and the Laser Pegs® pendant allows you to display smaller creations via a necklace around your neck. The pegs snap firmly together but come apart fairly easily for a child to build with. I love the open ended play that these toys have both within the app and using the physical toys. Kids can create over and over again and are not limited to “kits” or must have designs and instead can choose what they wish to make. Playing with these blocks in a darkened room is really fun as we get to watch our creations come to life. Laser Pegs work with with Lego’s and MAGFORMERs which means that you can purchase a set and try them with blocks you already own.
In terms of enhancements, for the physical toy, you must remove the “try me” batteries for some of the objects which plug into the triangular base. This involved taking apart the base which was a bit of a delicate operation – I would have liked to see more specific printed instructions on how to do this when opening the package for the first time. I’d also love to see a package which included the AC adapter when you get the set.
You can purchase these great toys (and try them out) at Target.
