bright illustrations, ability to target receptive and expressive language with a fun educational based game and critical thinking skills to discover the hidden animals
What we’d love to see…
a hint section for the hidden objects as well as a visual counting when finding hidden objects, the ability to count higher than ten, and childproofing of external links.
Summary
Best suited for toddlers and early preschoolers who are working on counting and puzzle exercises. Bright colors will engage children and encourage them to participate in the exercises.
Our Rating

Jungle Adventures is a app designed for iOS and Android that emeeyou is headquartered in Switzerland and is an education technology company which researches and develops evidence based educational products. For purposes of this review, the app was tested using iOS on an iPad and an iPhone. During a study for this app consisting of 56 children between 2 and four years old, 31% of children improved their knowledge of colors by two or greater, 45% of children improved picture naming skills and 38% of children improved object assembly (puzzle) skills. More details on the research is available on their website at http://www.emeeyou.com/research/. The app helps children practice counting skills from one through ten and puzzle building skills. The app targets expressive (spoken) and receptive (understood) language, critical thinking, colors, animal names and sounds. The app is also available in multiple languages which makes it nice for carrying over learning to another language.
The bright animals as part of the counting exercise were a favorite activity, although I would have liked to seen the animals numbered as you found them with a visual as well as the current audio clue. The English spoken within the app was very clear “one hungry yellow lion” and easy to understand. The puzzle exercise was fun although it got progressively harder and could become frustrating for some children. There is a setting that lets you pick, “easy, medium and hard” which can be accessed using the “cog-wheel” which is on the main screen where you pick either puzzles or jungle adventure.
In the animal counting exercise, it would be helpful to have numbers on the animals as you find them immediately (they currently pop up after five seconds) so that children know they have to find x number more. It would also be nice to have a hints section for both the hidden animal section as well as the puzzle section. In the puzzle section, you can pick “easy, medium and hard.” As a default, the app starts with medium which consists of the first two puzzles are straightforward blocks as you move on to puzzles three and above, which begins with
monkey the pieces change to triangles which can be a bit more difficult for children. The puzzle pieces change again to rectangles later on in the animals. There is currently no lock on the for parents section of the app which does have external links including Facebook, Twitter, the company website as well as iTunes. At the end of the jungle adventure, your child is offered the option to take a photo of themselves and the app asks if you would like to let it access your photos – this should also be childproofed. It would be nice if all the settings were “hidden” inside the “for parents” section to prevent children from changing them which can currently happen if they click on the cog wheel while within each of the mini-games. It would also be great if the counting was expanded to twenty, as currently children will “master” the app and want to move on beyond ten.
The app is best suited for toddlers and early preschoolers who are learning numbers, colors, and puzzle skills. It targets speech and language skills as well as critical thinking, colors, animal names and sounds as well as providing an element of fun and rewards for finding all of the animals or putting the puzzle pieces together.

Yes definitely! I’ve used apps to help skills like colors, writing, sorting…etc.
Yes, my daughter loves iPad apps. I use apps to help teach ABCs, numbers, colors, critical thinking, patterns, creative play and much more. We also just read story apps on the iPad which is more convenient when traveling (I.e., no heavy books).

As a school based Speech Language Pathologist, the iPad has provided a new and exciting way to introduce new vocabulary and concepts to children. I no longer print out or purchase cards for articulation therapy, I make them on the iPad!
