What we love…
the illustrations and all of the zoo animals banding together to help Puppup get back to his family
What we’d love to see…
word highlighting, the ability to repeat the words after hearing them read to you
Summary
Delightful story that encourages children to use their imagination and be in the story. The illustrations were top notch and worth the price of the book itself.
Our Rating

The Adventures of Pup Pup Lost at the Zoo is an iPad only app by Graymedia. This storybook featured Puppup and magical adventures with his friend. The story features a day at the zoo as Puppup makes friends with various zoo animals after a trip to the zoo with his “girl” Julia. The story introduces children to sixteen different animals in their zoo habitats. The app includes 35 pages and “read it to me” or “read it to myself” options. The app focuses on animal recognition, imagination and creative thinking skills. The book can be read from front to back like a traditional book, or you can look at the table of contents and go to the page that you want to go to. The background music can be turned on and off via the main page of the app as well.
We loved the beautiful illustrations and the variety of zoo animals. My son enjoyed exploring the pages to find the different animals in their natural habitats and doing natural activities like fishing, swimming, taking a nap with the grizzly bears, hanging with the gibbons and more! I think his personal favorite though was the dirt bath with the elephant and waterskiing with the penguin. I liked the underlying role of friendship in the story and the fact that all of the animals banded together to help Puppup find his family. The narration in the app was well done and the British accent was enjoyed by my son. The animations were wonderful and not distracting from the book – they were also realistic like the eagle’s view from down below as well as Puppup water skiing and the background moving. As a parent, I loved the last page of the app with the child snuggling with Puppup because I see my son in bed every night with his stuffed animals and it really made me smile.
I would love to see word highlighting in the app as it would be helpful for early readers who wish to use the app themselves. Currently when I read it to my son, without the narration we point to the words. I’d also like to see the ability to repeat the words on the page again as children are sometimes so entranced with finding the animation that they do not focus on the words the first time the page is written.

My son has several favorite stuffed animals and he asked me how we could make them come to life in the story. He told me that he imagined his favorite bunny was Puppup and that the bunny enjoyed all of the adventures in the book. The illustrations in the book really drew you in and the animation really helped children and adults imagine they were in the story. This is a timeless book which will be enjoyed by many. This app is currently on sale for 75% off and I urge you to get it before the price goes up.
