The Bear Went Over the Mountain by Loeschware is a new iPad or universal app for iOS featuring the Bear and a variety of mini games along with an original music score. Activities within the app include eight different scenes each of which has interactive options and characters. The app features activities such as recycling, counting, up, down, over, under, around and behind in order to advance within the scenes to his destination while learning about wildlife, and the different habitats in each scene.
Our favorite scene by far was the Moon where real photos and audio snippets are present. My son loved taking “camera” photos of his adventures with the app and building up his collection of photos in the scrapbook. Note – unlike many other apps these do not save in your camera roll (a plus in my mind) and your child can see them on the photos page. The original music in this app, like others from Loeschware is well done. I liked the audio snippets like, “the eagle has landed” which were pulled from actual audio clips and the photos were nice photos of items like the “lunar lander” I liked that you did the different activities and could count things like the bear going across the desert and hitting the musical notes, cleaning up the trash and putting it in the recycling bin. The app keeps track of all of the items you collect including the musical notes and has lots of fun hidden elements like a dancing cactus! I also liked that the app tied to common core standards for kindergarten. I really like the teaching that happens in the app with directions, word recognition, word highlighting, different geographies and wildlife. It helped my son understand different environments even though we haven’t been to all of them.
