Our Rating

The Trident Kraken A.M.S. series is Trident’s most protective line of cases. The line includes cases for the iPad, iPad mini, iPhone and Android phones, this review is of the iPad version which is compatible with iPad 2, 3 and 4. I tested this case with an iPad2.  A.M.S. stands for Adaptive Modular System.

The case comes in 3 pieces and is very easy to assemble.

Inner silicone layer: this just slips on and includes plugs over the mute button, charging and headphone ports.

Back cover: this is a hard polycarbonate shell that covers the back of the iPad, it clips on over the silicone layer giving extra strength and protection. it has cut-outs over the various ports and also allows the silicone to be exposed in certain areas so that the case is more “grippy”. There is also a cut-out over the Apple logo.

Screen cover : the screen cover is attached to a hard plastic rim that covers the front edges of the iPad. This is slightly overlapped by the back cover around the edges of the iPad and the 2 parts of the hard plastic cover clip firmly together. Once the cover is fully assembled the iPad is completely covered except for cutouts over the sound transmission holes which have dust filters over them, and a large cutout over the rear Apple logo. The headphone socket; charging port; home, mute, on/off and volume switches are all covered by silicone. The rear cutout is where the A.M.S. accessories attach, there is an iPad stand (sold separately) which can attach here and more accessories are planned.

Things I like about this case:

Dual layer of protection – this feels like it would give good protection if the case is dropped. The built-in screen protector works really well, good sensitivity and clarity and works well with all the styluses I tried. It does show fingerprints more than the iPad screen, but otherwise performs similarly, it cleans up well and gives me peace of mind that the screen won’t get accidentally scratched. As the screen protector is a separate part I would love to see extra screen protectors available for sale. This case is really easy to intall and remove – much simpler than many other protective cases I have tried. This is an advantage for me but may be a disadvantage if you have children who try to remove iPad cases. The areas where the silicone is exposed help to give a better grip than the polycarbonate shell alone and I would recommend holding it over these areas when carrying. It grips well in portrait mode but in landscape it is more slippery. The charging port, headphone socket and mute/ rotation button are all covered by silicone flaps that stay in place nicely and protect the ports but still make to easy to access for charging or connecting headphones. It is available in a variety of colors and I like being able to choose different colors of silicone to pair with the black polycarbonate case.

Disadvantages of this case:

It is not waterproof/ spill-proof, no carrying handle and the stand has to be purchased separately. Overall, great everyday case for use with kids.

Overall:

This is great everyday case for use with kids. My kids have had their iPad in it for the last couple of weeks, they like using it and it has been performing well for us, it is a case I would highly recommend.

I use this as well. And for the price think it is a good deal. The major problem I have with it is the stand that I had to purchase separately. It snapped off after two months. The stand did give a carrying handle and I could use the ipad in both landscape and portrait. Just a heads up to be careful with the stand.
