Little Digits by British app developer Cowly Owl, is an educational app to teach early numeracy skills. The app has three main features: simple number counting, addition, and subtraction. It uses touch recognition to identify the number of fingers placed on the screen. The app has no advertisements, or in-app purchases. On the home page of the app there is an ‘owl eyes’ icon which leads to an information section containing a link to the developers web site and an app store link. Parents can download a free printable coloring book featuring number characters 0 to 10 from the website.
From the home screen the child can choose from four large icons -?- the help screen; 123; addition or subtraction. A smaller microphone icon gives the option to customize number recordings to your own voice or your own language (our kids loved this!). The ? icon leads to a short video clip of a boy demonstrating the number game.
Following a simple one-second-finger touch, users are greeted by friendly number monsters. Each number character shown corresponds to the number of fingers touched to the screen and is paired with a customizable recording of that number, encouraging finger counting and number recognition skills. The addition/subtraction pages allow young learners to place more/less fingers on the screen until the correct answer is found, helping little ones learn to count up/down. An important note to turn off multitasking gestures on your device was a little hidden and we didn’t find it until thoroughly exploring all of the app features.
If you find little Digits in your iPad settings menu there are additional settings available – you can switch off the background music, limit the numbers used in addition and subtraction to 1-5 instead of 1-10 and switch off the ability to record new voices. We would like to see an option added to disable external links from the app.
Overall, this is a very unique app that works on finger counting and is enhanced by bright colorful fun illustrations and lively background music. Little Digits is an engaging learning app that held the attention of many learners with varying ability levels. As it works on counting to ten and simple addition and subtraction, where the highest number is ten it is suitable for preschool through early elementary school age children. Some of our test users accidentally placed fingers on the frame of the device vs. directly on the screen, resulting in incorrect feedback of the number of fingers placed. But boy did this app work those isolated finger movements! Our testers loved using one finger, multiple fingers, every other finger, one hand, both hands… Friendly monster numbers set to an upbeat rhythmic musical background motivated users to keep practicing different finger combinations – even when little finger muscles started to get tired!
