Proloquo2Go by AssistiveWare is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) App, it is a universal app that can be used on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The purpose of the app is to give users a voice and the ability to communicate. There is no lack of reviews available on the web from a technical and professional point of view, so I will not try to re-invent the wheel. I am not a Speech Language Pathologist, nor am I an Assistive Technology specialist, I am a mother and I will be reviewing the app from that perspective.
The App is easy to start using without any complicated hoops to jump through. Users are given a choice of starter vocabularies, Core (most frequently used words in English) or Basic (beginning communication). Additional categories can be created and saved as necessary. There are several voices included in the initial download, with approximately 30 more available to download with no additional charges. Proloquo2Go includes natural sounding children’s voices, and many english dialects. The voices do not sound like science fiction robots and are very natural.
Once starter vocabularies and voices are chosen, the app is ready to use. Each grid of word choices can be customized from every desired angle. Choose number of cells, inclusion of folders that expand to grouped word choices, change colors of borders and background to simplify associations, and create or remove cells as per users’ needs and abilities. You may even choose where text is placed within each cell. The keyboard is even customizable with the options to add buttons and adjust the colors and fonts (TONS of fonts available) and these added buttons operate as smoothly as the initial download options.
The wonderful custom options and ease-of-use with this app are tripled because of the amazing amount of tutorials available from the AssistiveWare website. Every time I thought I had explored the available options to their full potential, I would find another creative way to set things up by watching the videos. This company does not leave you once you make a purchase. I loved not feeling afraid to tinker with the app to make it “just right” for our needs. I felt confident that if I needed help, I could find it. I urge anyone that gets this app to take the time to “play” with it. I have included a screenshot to illustrate some of the ways I tinkered with adding buttons to the keyboard and a tiny glimpse of the options available. The app more than simply performs as promised with no bugs, it truly is a full-service AAC app.
Price. When discussing whether or not to purchase Proloquo2Go, the price tag is always a topic of discussion. Is it too much? Speaking as a parent that has tried many AAC apps, I have to say that the price is reasonable. This AAC will grow with the user. You can start as small as necessary and then move up to chatting and creating as many cells as needed. AssistiveWare sent out updates while I have been testing and the company even performed well in that respect stating clearly what would be updated and urging back-ups before updating so as to not lose any user settings.
I found Proloquo2Go to be an app that surpassed my expectations for performance. I was blown away with the available help on the website and the seemingly endless custom options that were very easy to learn and implement.
