Our Rating

Review by Marcia & Alison

Bugs and ButtonsBugs and Buttons by Little Bit Studios is a universal app that supports iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad. It has no advertisements or in-app purchases. It’s child safe with the information page being locked with a great parent lock (requiring users to solve a multiplication fact to open) thus preventing a direct link to the internet.  Read our review of Bugs and Bubbles, the second app in the series.

Users are greeted with lightly suspenseful music, a swarm of bees, ladybugs, spiders, an army of ants, and buttons (of course ! ) The graphics are quite realistic and may take some getting used to for those of us that are a little bug squeamish – especially for young preschoolers. (My youngest jumped back a little but continued to play once she saw me touch the bugs.) Users can select from guided or self-chosen games that include mazes, sorting, racing, matching, and more. With 18 games, there’s something for everyone! Each game provides visual demonstrations of the required finger movements as well as the basic premise behind each game, making it easy for even non-readers to independently learn how to play each game. The games progressively adapt to users’ needs – getting more advanced with continued success and easing up if too many items are missed. The app also includes a reward stamp collection and added features/settings available via the iPad’s main settings.

iPhone Screenshot 2We loved the app and how children felt like they were pulled in to the app  with all the fantastic graphics.   The app really helps kids learn while playing and practicing sequencing.   My son loved the buttons exercise and sorting which were great fine motor play.

Bugs and Buttons is a unique app that works on many cognitive skills including patterns, sorting, memory, mazes, counting, and letters. It also encourages visual tracking (great for reading skills) and incorporates many fine motor movements (e.g., point, pinch, isolated finger patterns, use of both hands). This app is a great brain builder and an even better motor builder – truly an OT’s delight!  This app is a must have in your app collection and is fun for adults and children.  It’s a nice diversion from traditional fine motor skills apps and makes learning fun!
