What we love…

The richly illustrated stories and the ability to record your own narration. Great for encouraging reading fluency and story telling when used by your child.

What we’d love to see…

Longer recording time.

Summary

Entertaining and educational, StoryBox 1 and 2 present a variety of top-quality reading materials conveniently in an app.

Our Rating

StoryBox Apps by Bayard UK are the digital versions of the award-winning magazines of the same name.  These are magazines targeted at Bayard’s youngest group of readers aged 3 to 6 years and are available only through monthly subscription.

My family has had the StoryBox magazines for years, each issue preciously kept for the next child to read and then given away to other families when the kids have outgrown them. My older kids loved receiving their magazines in the mail and would bring them to school to share with friends.  Now we no longer subscribe to the magazines since we can read them at the local libraries but we still get the same top quality reading materials.

The StoryBox apps present the best way for families to experience what the print magazines can offer.  The contents of these apps follow the same format as that of the paper magazines.  Every issue contains a beautifully illustrated story that appeals to young children  (How about a MOOH? A night at school).  Interesting science facts are presented in bite size and in a fun manner in Science with Whizkid (Why do aeroplanes leave trails in the sky? Why do we have five fingers?)  Kids love to learn about animals that are out of the ordinary (Humpback Whales, Stags) and there are pages and pages of thematic activities to educate and entertain young readers (Fly your kite! Fun on the Farm).  There’s even a wordless comic strip starring cute characters that lets your child be the storyteller (Enter the world of dreams with Polo)! Covering a wide variety of age appropriate topics, the StoryBox magazines are great read for families who love reading with their young children.

The StoryBox apps have the advantage over the print version in several ways:-
* all the words are read aloud although you can turn it off, if you wish.
* illustrations are more vivid.
* characters in the stories are animated enticing your child to touch them but they are not interactive as you would expect from an app which is a good thing since that could be distracting.
* activity pages can be reset and done over and over again or enjoyed by a different child.
* individual grid in the wordless comics strip can be enlarged and these are accompanied by soft music for better enjoyment.
* you can open the apps again and again, turn the pages (more than 40 in total) over and over again yet they are not subject to wear and tear like the print version.

photoMy 6 year old really enjoyed the digital version of the magazine.  The feature that really engaged him was the ability to record himself reading the stories aloud and listen to his own narration.  He also attempted to narrate the wordless comic story.  This feature is great for encouraging reading fluency and story telling. I just wish that the recording duration could be made longer.

photoWhile I prefer the digital version, I don’t think the publisher has the intention to go digital all the way. Having 2 digital issues developed more than a year apart convinced me that these apps are just teasers for the print magazines.  With the exception of the comic strip (which continues from issue to issue), each StoryBox App is a stand alone app that can be enjoyed on its own.  Like the print magazines, StoryBox 1 and 2 are like windows to the world, encouraging your child to discover and learn more about the world they live in.  Whether it’s the app or the print version, we highly recommend that you check out StoryBox today!
