Twinkle, Twinkle, Nighty Night

Twinkle, Twinkle, Nighty Night is a bedtime story app for young children. It was written by Alexis H. Purcell, illustrated by Allison Keeme and it was developed by a Black Dog Books. Alexis also wrote The Turkey Who Forgot How to Gobble, which we reviewed here. The book has read to me and read by myself options, and the background music can be independently switched off. It contains no adverts, in-app purchases, social media or external links.

This is a sweet and simple bedtime story for the youngest listeners. It is night-time in Jolly Town, and everyone is asleep, or are they ? The reader goes through the house, the lights are dimmed, mum, dad and children are in bed sleeping. They can push open the bedroom doors and see the children sound asleep in their beds. But someone is still awake, who can it be ? The stuffed animals in the playroom are all awake as they have lost their happy dreams and can’t find them. The reader helps each animal to find the dream star with its happy dream and go to sleep. When all the animals have gone to sleep there is one more dream star left – who is it for? It is the reader’s own dream star, tapping on it causes colored stars to fall as the child is read a bedtime rhyme ” Twinkle, twinkle, nighty night here’s a hug to hold you tight and keep you safe throughout the night. Goodnight my sweet child”. The app closes with a vocal rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle Litte Star as all the animals sleep peacefully.

The app has a very peaceful feel to it making it a perfect bedtime story for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. It is accompanied by night time sound effects- insects chirping, owls hooting and lullaby music. It has very simple interactive elements- tapping on stars to bring up their dreams and dragging them to the animals whose dreams they are.  Hints appear to tell the child what to do if they are unsure. It is nicely narrated, or you can read it to your child. It is a book that I could see becoming part of a regular soothing, bedtime routine. I would love to see an option to also record your own narration as this would be a great story to record and playback when a parent was unable to be there for bedtime.
