Smarty Ears was founded in December of 2009 by Barbara Fernandes, a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association. The company develops apps that allow speech language pathologists (SLPs) and families to practice communication skills with children. Their apps are known for their detailed data collection (especially for SLPs), that can be imported to Smarty Ears’ therapy report center allowing all data collected in any of their assessment or therapy apps to be in one place that can then be printed or shared with family through email. (I have very involved families who love the emails when I have time to send them, and love that so much data is stored in one place for progress reports) Their programs also allow for customization for the personal touch. The video tutorials are also very helpful. Apraxia Ville is an iPad only app, and the first app from Smarty Ears designed to specifically treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech. The app has a farmyard theme with cute cartoon animals.
Apraxia is an area of speech therapy that many speech therapists make their own materials for, as the pre packaged materials are usually costly enough that SLPs don’t want to spend their budget on one program. Their are only a few apps that systematically treat apraxia. Even though more apps state they are for the treatment of apraxia most do not have the capability of separating words into the syllable types needed for apraxia therapy, the therapist would need to separate the words manually. Apraxia Ville allows sorting of words by syllable type, sound type, and specific vowels without having to sort through the words and manually sort. Up to four children can work on their own targets on their turn without having to keep cards separated for each child’s targets. Talk about portability and ease of use! An SLPs dream for group treatment of apraxic students with different sound difficulties. This allows for less time planning, choosing pictures and keeping targets separated for students and more time actually working on the correct targets for each child!
The Sound Windows activity is perfect for students needing sound and syllable practice. Each window contains animations for vowels and consonants which provide an animated visual aid for phoneme production. The Farm House is where players can practice single-syllable word production at the CV ( Consonant-vowel), VC ( vowel-consonant) or CVC level. The Words Farm is where players can learn and practice multi-syllabic word production by combining single-syllable words from the Farm House. There is a built-in voice recorder so students can record and playback their utterances. Things I would like to see added in a future update are: a note taking section, real faces in the sound production and some reinforcement to keep young kids attention.

Overall, a wonderful app that fills a void and saves a lot of preparation time.
