What we love…

Beautiful illustrations, calming music, 8 games in one app.

What we’d love to see…

Adding audio count in sheep pop game, fixing glitch in sheepdog game.

A charming app that uses sheep for what else, but to help calm us

Our Rating

InsomniApp - Count some sheep & fall asleep InsomniApp – Count some sheep & fall asleep is a universal app illustrated by Chantal Bourgonje and developed by Tizio. Chantal and Tizio have previously collaborated to produce the book apps Fierce Grey Mouse, Finn’s Paper Hat and No Dogs Allowed. The app has no advertisements or in-app purchases. from the main page their is a “more” button that takes you to appstore links and Chantal’s website. You do need answer yes to then exit the app, but we would like to see this area childproofed. The app is accompanied by soothing, lullaby style music and there is an option to turn off music (although we’re not certain why you would want to) and sound. A free lite version of the app is also available with 2 of the 8 games.

InsomniApp is a quaint little app that uses the calming charm of sheep to help children learn counting, matching, and some figure ground skills too. Added fun includes “dress the sheep” and also “pop the sheep” games, endless fun for kids of all ages and favorites of our testers. The beautiful illustrations by Chantal Bourgonje are charming and add a storybook feel to the app. Unlike most apps, this one helps little ones calm and can be a nice addition naptime routines. There’s an occasional glitch we experienced using an iPad2 in the find the “sheep dog” game that we would like to see fixed. To make the app a little more educational, adding an audio of the number (vs just a visual) during the sheep touch game would be a nice upgrade.

The “sheep count” game gives an option to turn “interaction” on/off, giving users the choice to guide the sheep or just watch the sheep jump over the fence, making the app more appealing for a larger age/ability range. The “sheep dog” and the “sheep match” games can be pretty challenging visually in regards to finding small details, which can be frustrating for some of the youngest players. Our little testers cracked up at the sing along – “Rock-a-bye-baby” – sung first by a sheep trio and then by a baby sheep in “baa” fashion. InsomniApp is a nice change of speed compared to the typical move-it-and-shake-it apps. We recommend trying it with the very young just learning to point and touch, letting the “on the go” kids explore it, and checking it out yourself!
