DW09 – Wi-Reader Wireless Card Reader and Router by Apotop- Review and Giveaway
The DW09-Wi-Reader by Apotop is a palm-sized gadget that fulfills 2 functions in one. You can use it to turn a wired internet connection into a wireless one which is especially useful when travelling and staying at a hotel without Wifi. It can also be used to transfer files from a USB drive or SD card to up to 3 smartphones or tablets at once. It is compatible with both Apple and Android and you can use the the Wi-Reader to free up space on your tablet or smart phone by removing non-app items such as videos, photos, music and documents and storing them on a USB drive or SD card, then accessing them via your Wi-Reader. It is also a quick and easy way to share photos, videos, music, and documents with others and to upload or download between your computer and iPad or iPhone.
We recently reviewed the DW17 Wi-reader and this is a very similar device, but even smaller and more portable. The DW-17 also acts as a backup battery for your iPhone which the DW09 does not. The DW09 fits comfortably in the palm of your hand measuring just 2″ x 2.4″ x 1″ and weighs only 2 oz. It has a built-in battery allowing it to be used for up to 3hrs unplugged, and it recharges via a mini USB to USB charging cable which is included. There are times when I would like a longer battery-life, if this is an issue for you, then the DW017 has a 7hr battery life. I have tested this with Apple devices- MacBooks, iPads and iPad minis but it is also compatible with Android devices.
When you are travelling it can be frustrating to stay in a hotel with internet access but be unable to access it as it is wired and you only have a tablet with you. To turn that wired internet into wireless you simply plug in the Wi-Reader and switch it on go into your devices settings menu and under network select Wi-Reader and you have Wi-Fi internet access. IPad, iPhone, smart phones, tablets and laptops can connect to the internet at the same time.
This is my favorite feature of the DW09. To use this you first have to download the free Wi-Reader app from iTunes (or Google play for Android) and install it on the devices that you are using it with. Switch on the Wi-Reader’s WI-Fi and select it in the devices settings menu under network. You can transfer files from a SD card or USB drive to up to 3 devices at a time. You can transfer music, photographs, videos and documents. It has a rechargeable battery allowing wireless sharing for up to 3 hours.
This is a really easy way to transfer photos or videos from an SD card onto your iPad and means you can transfer them to other people at the same time. This is great when I’m with family or friends and want to give them copies of photos I’ve just taken. As long as they have the app installed I can do this straight away. It allows 2-way sharing of photos and videos, so I can upload from my iPad or iPhone camera roll onto an SD card to free up space on the device too. It does not allow storage of apps (I don’t think Apple allows this) but you can free up space by moving other items such as photos, videos or documents onto a USB or SD card.
Photos and Videos
Can be viewed from the Wi-Reader directly without downloading, or downloaded into the Wi-Reader app or the devices camera roll. Each picture/ video has to be highlighted to indicate which ones you wish to transfer, it would be nice to also have a “transfer all” option for when you have a lot of pictures you wish to transfer. When travelling I find it especially useful to load up the flash drive with videos of favorite T.V. episodes so that the children can watch them without filling up my iPad storage.
Documents and Music
These can be viewed directly from the Wi-Reader or downloaded into the Wi-reader app. You can create folders within the Wi-Reader app to organize your storage. It would be nice to have the option to download music directly into your music file of the iPad, and to download documents to pages. With the documents you can always copy and paste to pages if you wish.
Overall, the DW09 Wi-Reader by Apotop is an incredibly useful 2-in-1 gadget in a very small lightweight package. It is so portable that I frequently carry it with me on days out to make it easy to stream videos, share photos with family and friends; and expand the storage capacity of my iPad. I also like knowing I can access the internet on my iPad during hotel stays whether or not they have Wifi internet available. If you also want the added feature of using it as a iPhone battery back up or want a longer battery life, I would recommend the DW17, otherwise this is a cheaper and even more portable alternative.
