Sofia Bag by Mia Tui – Review
I recently had the opportunity to review The Grace Bag from Mia Tui and fell in love with it, you can read my review here. I ordered the Sofia in Teal at the same time as the Grace, but it lay unused in my closet for a few weeks as I was enjoying the Grace too much to use another bag. Eventually I decided to get it out and try it, and fell in love all over again! The Mia Tui bags are just so well designed they are a pleasure to use, at this point asking me to pick a favorite between the Grace and Sofia is like asking me to pick a favorite between my children – they have distinctly different styles but I love them both.
The Sofia is a Hobo – style handbag ( or purse for the Americans), I find it works really well as an under-arm handbag, but it does also come with a detachable shoulder strap if you prefer to carry it that way. The bag has 2 snaps underneath the ends of the zipper so you can snap them down for a classic Hobo-look and un-snap them if you need more space in the bag.
I love that the Sofia is a very fashionable looking bag, but really practical with it. The Sofia comes with a a clear plastic zip-top bag designed to carry make up, I keep all sorts of little essentials in it: band-aids, headache pills, hair ties, tissues and charging cables. It also comes with a matching clutch bag that is perfect for carrying your wallet and checkbook. The clutch has both a removable hand strap and a detachable shoulder strap ; with the shoulder strap on it makes a perfect evening bag for when I just want to carry my wallet, keys and lipstick.
Inside the bag
There are 2 side pockets – the clutch bag and clear vinyl bag fit in these, but they are also perfectly sized for an iPad. One of these pockets is larger than the other, the bigger one fits a full-sized iPad and the smaller one is just the right size for an iPad Mini. You can keep the pockets flush against the side of the bag, or un-snap the corners to make the pockets bigger.
At one end of the bag is an insulated water bottle pocket, and at the other end is a cellphone pocket with 2 pen (or stylus) holders.
There is also a long elastic with a clip on the end to attach your keys to – great if you (ahm, like me) have a tendency to mis-place your house keys.
There is a large central section that you can easily fit a full sized iPad into and lots of other things a busy mom needs to carry.
The Sofia comes in a wide range of colors, I picked the Teal which is a really cheerful bright blue, and a think fits this bag perfectly. The lining is a bright pink which is great – so many bags have black linings that make it impossible to find things in, whereas the bright pink lining is much more practical for finding things in your bag. The Sofia, like all Mia Tui bags, is made of a soft faux-leather which looks and feels like a nice quality leather, but is much more practical as it resists moisture and wipes clean easily. It is very well made and all the stitching is beautifully done.
The bag is really roomy inside, I live in a county that has recently outlawed disposable plastic shopping bags, and although I bring my re-useable ones along on weekly trips to the grocery store, I often find myself with a selection of loose items when I’m running errands, and they usually just get popped into my Sofia. On a recent Saturday trip it easily held canned food, seeds, catapults and jewelry as well as all my regular items! I’ve been using the bag for over a month now and despite some rough treatment it is standing up very well. I was concerned that the lighter color might start looking grubby quickly, but it wipes down easily and stays clean.
Overall, if you are looking for a fashionable yet practical handbag the Sofia is a great choice, I love this bag! If you haven’t yet discovered Mia Tui bags I’d highly recommend checking out their website today, they look great, wear well and are really well-designed for keeping everything organized in your bag. One word of warning though- these bags are addictive; like potato chips- you can’t just have one -once you get your first Mia Tui you’ll find yourself wanting more! The clutch and PVC bag make switching bags really easy, when I want a quick change of style I just transfer them between my Grace and Sofia (the Sofia clutch is larger but it still fits), and ‘m ready to go !
