100 Zoo Animals from 100 Things App Review

What we love…

fantastic photos of each animal and the sound of selected animals

What we’d love to see…

child proofing of external links, more factual information about each animal as well as pronouncing each animals name

Summary

Basic idea of the app is there, but needs more content to be educational for all children

100 Zoo Animals from 100 Things App is a universal iOS app that depicts 100 Zoo Animals within the app using photographs and audio clips. The photographs are taken by professional photographers.

The app has beautiful and realistic graphics which depict each of the animals and when you touch them their sound is played via the iPad. Not all of the animals have sounds that play, but about 70% seem to. There is a section where you can “pick” by animal which one you want to see within the app which allows parents to show specific types of animals or your child to pick their favorites from within the app.

In terms of enhancements, this app needs a parent lock as there are two areas on the main screen which have external links to the iTunes store and need a parent lock. The app should also say the name of the animal and it would be great if a quick fact or two was shared about them when you look at them. I also found a few times that the audio included external noises other than the animal such as children in the “African Lion.” If the developer included information about each type of animal such as habitat, where the animal is commonly from, a pronunciation of the name of the animal it would be much more educational. I’d also like to see a fun quiz at the end to test the knowledge of the user of the app.

There are no in-app purchases within the app, but there are external links to the iTunes store which are not childproof. The app is educational in that it tells you what each animal is via written text and plays a sound. It needs a bit more content including information about each type of animal, a spoken pronunciation of the animal to provide more educational information. It is best tested with a parent/child and could be used in home schooling or to accompany a trip to the zoo. The app is best suited for toddlers through grade school children who enjoy seeing pictures of animals and hearing the sounds that they make.
