Wild Kratts Creature Math by PBS Kids -Review
Wild Kratts Creature Math is a math app for early elementary school students by PBS Kids. It is based on the very popular PBS Kids T.V. show Wild Kratts that stars Martin and Chris Kratt. It is child friendly with no in-app purchases, adverts or external links.
The app has 4 player profiles- each represented by a different colored paw print and each player has their own ecosystem to look after. When they start to play it is a pretty empty place with grass, a lake and stream but very little plants and no animals. The students picks a spot in their habitat, and can choose an animal home or food item to place there. To earn that item they have to answer a simple addition or subtraction problem. Martin and Chris are there to guide them, and the student uses manipulatives such as seeds or power discs to help in doing the math question.
As they answer the math problem they also learn facts about the animals they are feeding or housing. There are eight different animals and sixteen different home and food types. Each child can create their own unique ecosystem by adding more of their favorite animals or plants. The ecosystem is ever-changing – the animals eat the food provided and need more, storms may roll in causing damage that needs repair, and they always need to keep a look out for Gourmand stealing animals. The child can earn a series of badges for looking after the animals and protecting the habitat. The app adapts to the child’s progress and adjusts the difficulty level of the questions as their skill improves.
My six year-old twins, like many US school children love the Wild Kratts, they have learned a lot about wildlife from the show and will happily watch episodes over and over, as a result they were very excited to learn there was a Wild Kratts app. The fact that you have to practice math to play with the app hasn’t fazed them at all, and it is an app they they keep returning to play again and again as a favorite app, without realizing they are actually doing schoolwork as they play!
Overall, this is a great math app for early elementary school students, it is interactive and engaging, and keeps children motivated to practice their addition and subtraction skills, whilst at the same time teaching them about nature. Highly recommended for K- 2nd grade students working on basic addition and subtraction skills.
