Often we teach our kids how to tell time but we don’t consciously teach them how the clock came about and what does the time that they read off the clock mean. Similarly, there are many apps that teach time telling but probably none that can help you explain this abstract concept of time to kids.
New app Tic Toc Time by Seven Academy fills this gap perfectly with fun games and animated lessons (with the Beaver family) that will help your child better appreciate the clock as a tool for measuring time and understand why he needs to learn how to read time. There are a total of 6 learning sections in this app, each with 3 game levels (except the clock challenges which has 2) – The Compass, The Sun and The Shadow, Time from Space, Play with The Clock, The Clock Challenges and Bump the Clock.
Before learning how to read the clock, kids are shown how a 24-hour day is related to the movements of the sun and the earth. It uses a compass to explain these movements while teaching kids how a compass works and how we use it to find our way. Next, kids learn about the sun and the shadow and how their positions tell the time of the day. They then journey into space to learn about daytime and nighttime and how our 24-hour day is organized into the 12-hour clock.
After setting the stage, the app teaches kids how to read time on a digital clock and then an analog clock, which you may find unusual. To learn to read an analog clock, kids need to understand the 2 number systems, namely 1-12 hours, 1-60 minutes (in blocks of 5) and it makes sense to teach the simpler digital clock before the analog clock.
In this section, kids learn to tell time through activities like putting the clock together, setting the hour and minute hands on an analog clock to the time on the digital clock in increasing levels of difficulty, learning the terms quarter past/to and half past and identifying the correct clock face.
The final section presents fun and challenging quizzes to reinforce what have been taught while the Bump the Clock challenge combines the reading of both the digital and analog clocks. Players’ scores are saved to encourage them to practice more and get higher scores. You can also register for a parent’s account to monitor your child’s progress (up to 40 children) in real time and let your child gain access to a Green Academy Montessori Garden where he can play and learn about the development of different plants and caring for the environment.
– 10 language options – English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean
– Choice of lessons delivered in 2 formats : audio or text (perfect for school use).
– Choice of 12- or 24-hour clock.
– Parents/educators dashboard.
This app offers so much more than the typical time-telling app, kids learn the Science behind time telling. Games are designed to allow kids to play and observe how the positions of the sun and shadow change in the course of a day, how the time of the day relates to the rotating earth, how our daily activities correspond to the time of the day, how the day is divided into AM and PM and how a 24-hour day is represented on a clock. Some of these concepts are difficult for kids to understand and for us to teach but the great visuals, interactive games and the easy-to-understand lessons in this app will help you teach them more easily and confidently. The games are not only educational but fun as well. As a bonus, kids earn water, sun and seeds for their Montessori Garden each time they complete a game. I especially like how Tic Toc Time always show the movement of the sun in all its lessons and games which reinforces the difference between AM and PM (5am is not the same as 5pm).
Tic Toc Time does such a wonderful job in showing the passage of time in a 24-hour day, I hope it can extend its coverage to the whole calendar – week, month and year in their future updates. The app recognizes the importance of introducing the concept of time and the clock before teaching how to tell time and this alone is reason enough for you to get the app. With superb graphics, cute beaver characters, unique games, motivating rewards and easy to understand lessons, it is the perfect app to supplement your child’s lessons on time-telling.
Tic Toc Time is available now at a special launch price of $2.99. The regular price will be $4.99 after September 19th.
