Survivor + Catalyst Waterproof Case for iPhone 5/5s by Griffin Technology – Review and Giveaway
If you are looking for a tough, waterproof, shockproof case for your iPhone 5/ 5s look no further – Griffin Technology have just the case for you. The Survivor+ Catalyst comes in 3 color choices – black, pink and blue. I have tested the black version with my iPhone 5 and it is by far my favorite everyday case for my iPhone.
The Survivor+ Catalyst case comes in 2 main pieces – the case and the back piece, they are held together by clips on 3 slides and it is very quick and easy to put on or take off. The bottom clip covers the charging port so you just open the port when you want to charge it. There is a screw-in plug that covers the headphone port. When you want to use headphones you unscrew this, if you are using headphones out of water you just plug in as usual. If you have waterproof headphones and plan to use it in water then screw in the included waterproof headphone adaptor, then plug your headphones as usual. The home button has a soft, press-able cover and the camera, volume and mute switches are all functional too. If you do need to remove the case for any reason it is quick and easy to do so.
The case has waterproof acoustic membranes covering the microphones and speaker, they keep the water out but let you still hear your iPhone and let others hear you when using the phone. The screen is covered by a screen protector and works well, if you have any problems with the screen: open the charging flap, press gently to expel air and close again.
The case is kept watertight using a series of O-rings – there is a large one around the back door and smaller ones on each port/ opening. It is important to check these regularly if you are using the case in water. Because the case is mostly clear you can actually just look through it to check on the O- rings. Before you use the case for the first time, and before each time you use it in water, Griffin advises doing a 30 minute submersion test to check the case is waterproof, to do this you actually need to weigh the case down by putting something on top of it otherwise it will float. When you are using it in real life water situations having it float is very useful- you are less likely to lose it if you drop it in water and if you do drop it without having checked the seals any problems are less likely to be catastrophic.
I appreciate the fact that the case is waterproof – in the summer months it meant I could use my iPhone at the lake and swimming pool without having to worry, and if the iPhone should ever fall in the toilet (it happens!) it would be protected. On an everyday basis I’m not taking it swimming with me, but what I am doing is using my phone whilst being a busy mum, that means it gets dropped and things get split on or near it. I have given it a pretty tough testing in everyday life over the last few months, including, many, many (unintentional) drops and it has stood up very well. I love the fact it has stood up so well to everyday life using this case I don’t feel i have to “baby” my iPhone. I also really like having an attached wrist strap which is very convenient especially when using it around water. The one thing I would like to see is replacement gaskets available to buy and I can’t yet see them on the website. I did not test this with an iPhone 5s but I understand that it does prevent the fingerprint identity sensor from working on the 5S.
I tested the black version of the case which was the first one available, but there are now 3 colors to choose from – black, pink and blue. It is a really practical everyday iPhone case, protecting it from drops, spills, dust, dirt and immersion. I have used it on a really, really dusty camping trip, at the pool, in the lake, at the beach and for several months as my everyday phone case and it has taken all I can throw at it! Highly recommended, I love this case!
