Dr. Panda Bus Driver by Dr. Panda is the latest installment in the Dr. Panda series of apps. In this app, Dr. Panda is driving a bus around either a city, countryside, harbor or a variety of other locations picking up and dropping off his passengers, painting the bus, refilling the gas tank and more! Much like a traditional bus, you have to stop to let passengers and other vehicles go by, stop for trains that will pass as well as clean up the bus after your “route” has been completed. This app is designed for preschoolers through early elementary school similar to other Dr. Panda apps and will provide hours of open ended play for them that uses fine motor skills both from seating passengers and driving the bus either with your finger or by gently moving your device to steer it from side to side to ensure it stays in the road. The scenery within the app changes each time you launch it – and can range a harbor complete with a drawbridge, railroad crossings, tunnels, birds in the road to a countryside. Dr. Panda must deliver his animal friends safely to their destination while ensuring they are sitting down on the bus and watching out for obstructions. When an obstruction comes up – a warning “light” comes up inside the bus so you can touch it to stop for it and allow the drawbridge to go up and down, passengers to cross the road as well as watching out for birds and other wildlife that might be on the road.
One of my son’s favorite features of the app was the ability to adjust the speed of the bus using the lever, turning on the windshield wipers as well as looking at the view from either the bus drivers perspective or from above the bus. He also loved going to the paint shop and making his own adaptation of the bus complete with a variety of paints which after it was painted was driven along the road. Other mini games include filling up the bus, cleaning up the bus after the passengers have gotten off as well as taking it through the car wash and washing off all of the road debris. My son absolutely loved the mountain scene where he could see the rainbow and would often open and close the app until it cycled to this particular scene – it was interesting to see his favorite parts of the app. My son also enjoyed listening to the radio which was controlled from inside the bus as well.
In terms of improvements to the app, I would like to see the ability for passengers to get on and off the bus according to the child’s whim rather than getting on and off as they wished. It might also be fun for them to “imagine” their destination and have the child drive them there – this would practice instructions within the app. A future edition might incorporate students as well as animals that Dr. Panda would have to drive to the school house in addition to the regular route. It would also be nice if you could have three passengers to fill the three seats – not just two as is currently allowed.
The app contains a parental lock which requires you to tap on a lock a selected number of times in order to get into the parent section. The parent section does contain external links and allows you to shut off the “promotion screen” which shows other Dr. Panda apps as well.
Dr. Panda Bus Driver provided hours of entertainment to my son who loved imagining all the places that he could go with the bus. I really liked the open ended concept as well as the ability for him to control the speed, ensure the bus stayed in the road (although without touching it, it did stay in the road with a few erratic moves) and watching out for obstacles. This app practices fine motor skills (painting the bus, seating the passengers, driving the bus on the track, washing the bus and filling it up with gasoline), creative open ended play as well as following directions.
Other apps from Dr. Panda include: Dr. Panda Teach Me, Dr. Panda’s Home, Dr. Panda Airport, Art Class by Dr. Panda, Dr. Panda Supermarket, Dr. Panda Handyman, Dr. Panda Veggie Garden, Dr. Panda Beauty Salon, Dr. Panda Hospital, Dr. Panda Daycare and Dr. Panda’s Restaurant.

Alison, the American iMum is from Massachusetts. She lives there with her two sons and husband. In their spare time, they enjoy playing outside, enjoying nature and of course testing apps and fantastic products on their devices. My older son loves technology and loves testing out the “latest and newest” apps and tech. I love sharing information about apps and products with others to help them make decisions without feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices.
