Linguapix by Expressive Solutions- Review
Linguapix is an iPad only app for working on Expressive Language, developed by SLP Eric Sailers for Expressive Solutions. It is available in two versions: a free version with in-app purchase and a full version. The free version includes the Health and Safety deck with 77 cards depicting nouns and verbs, with fourteen more decks available for in-app purchase. The full version contains over 1,000 cards in fifteen different decks, and allows you to create your own decks of cards too. You can create and track data for multiple user profiles and it can be used for group speech therapy with up to 8 students in a session. This review is of the full version.
The cards are illustrated with real photos and can be used to work on expressive language using 3 different activities: Flashcards, Matching and Pick or Spin.
To start using the app first you need to create individual user profiles, to do this tap on the Flashcard, Matching or Pick and Spin icon on the home page. This brings up a list of users and here you can create new users, choose which decks they work on and pick their default level for various tasks. If you wish to edit a user profile at any time repeat this process, tap edit and select the user name, it will then bring up the your options.
Choose which of the 3 activities to work on in the session, then bring up the list of users as above, and select the students. If you include a picture in the user profile it will show as the users icon, otherwise they will be represented by their initials. Up to 8 students can be in one session each working on their own choice of decks. All the selected students icons appear at the top of the screen and to change whose turn it is simply tap on the next students icon.
In the Flashcard activity there are four different options : Say It, Repeat It, Expand It and Describe It, cards include both verbs and nouns. For all the activities there is the option for the student to record themselves and then play it back – which many students really enjoy doing. For every question the SLP or parent grades the response as correct it incorrect, and if it was correct but the student needed prompts they press the P button to record this.
Say It : The student looks at the picture and the narrator asks a question such as “what is it?” or “what are they doing?”
Repeat It: The student sees and hears the verb or noun, this is also a one word answer to the question in Say It, and needs to repeat it.
Expand It: The student is asked to “Make a sentence about it”. There are 4 options here the default is they see a blank line, but if they need help you can select to give them a sentence starter such as “My favorite….”, or they can see and hear a simple sentence such as “My favorite sea animal is a Sea Horse”, or a compound/ complex sentence such as “I like the Sea Horse, but the fish are more colorful.”
In this section the default is to score all grammar but you can also select to score them on more specific targets such as including “an” or “the” correctly in a sentence; working on a specific tense; or on certain basic concepts. Up to 4 targets can be selected at a time, and these can be changed by tapping on the users icon at the top of the screen.
Describe It: this section is for working on WH questions : who, what, where, when and why. A WH question will come up on the screen and the narrator will ask the question. Tapping on the list icon to the left of the card lets you see all the WH questions for hat card and choose a specific one.
When changing between students the app uses the students own deck selection but stays on the previous users option e.g. ‘Say It”, you can change by tapping on another option but it would be nice if it remembered which option that student was working on during their previous turn, as students in a group session may be working at different levels.
This is a classic matching game with 6, 12 or 20 cards. it can be played in 2 modes: Say It or Repeat It, and the student’s answer is graded as in the Flashcard activity. You can also record and playback their responses. Multiple students can take turns, each has their own game with their own choice of decks.
Pick or Spin
In this activity the student can work on Expand It and Describe It. In Expand It they can practice repeating simple or compound/ complex sentences. In Describe It they answer WH questions. Hitting the “spin” button will randomly select a card from their selected decks and pressing “speak” will have the question or phrase repeated. The student can record and playback their answers.
Adding Custom Decks
One feature I love about this app is that, as well as including a large number of decks and cards, it also allows you to create your own custom cards and decks. This is really easy to do and you can use photos from your camera roll or take pictures with the iPad camera. You give your custom deck a name and it shows up with all the other decks when you select decks to work on.
For each card you type and record a word or phrase; a simple sentence and a compound/ complex sentence, and label it as a noun or verb. For “Say It” there are a choice of 7 who or what questions and you choose the appropriate one. For “Describe It” there is a long list of WH questions to choose from and you can select whichever ones are you feel are appropriate. Once you have created your own decks and cards they look very professional and are pretty much indistinguishable from the included ones (except that it is your voice you hear for the 3 items recorded above). I would love to see the inclusion of Bing or Google image search to make it easier to add images for objects/ actions that you don’t have pictures of.
After you have completed a session you can look at the students data, both for this session and for previous sessions. Data can be shared for just one session or all the sessions from that student. It is very useful for SLP’s to record how a student is doing for for parents to be able to share with the SLP how the child is doing at home. If the student has multiple sessions in one day they show as separate entries – it would be nice to have the option to combine all the data from the same activity on the same day.
Overall this is a fantastic app for working on expressive language, the photographs, graphics and professional narration give it a very professional, polished look and it is very customizable. It has a huge range of cards in it and I love the option to add your own custom decks, I would love to see Bing or Google image search added to make it even easier to create new cards. Having 3 different ways to work on the material is good for keeping students engaged, as is the record and playback feature. This app has so much in it, and so many different customization options that it can be overwhelming at first, so I’d highly recommend watching the introductory video, and for more information visiting the developers website.
I highly recommend downloading the free version today so that you can test out the app for yourself, and I think the full version is very good value at the current price of $24.99.
